Modeling a surface for the lens is actually a really good idea I never though of. A small box of architectural glass ought to do the job nicely.

 

But wouldn't that give unwanted reflections of the scene behind the camera on the glass in front of the 'camera'?

Maybe a cilinder primitive with a solid plane on one end, and glass on the other would be safer. I'll try and see if I can parent one to a camera, to make it pan and tilt with it.

Not if the reflection color is black. ;)

If you're experimenting, I'd go with the cylinder too, or even just the plain square primitive plane with a little y depth added to it. And as you suggested, arrange in front of the camera's 'lens' area and parent to the camera. I'd be rather curious how that all works out when you get a render punched out.
