Constantly correcting these points and constantly seeing the misinformation anyway.

If you have Poser Pro, not Poser 9, and you enable render GC, and you plan to use linear adjustments inside the envsphere shader, then and ONLY then must you change the gamma in and gamma out to 1.

If you make no internal adjustments (such as with the HSV node) then the in and out gamma don't matter since they cancel. You could even set them to gamma = 14354 and it would still look the same.

Is this understood yet?

Gamma In is to get your image data ready for linear workflow. Such as, for example, doubling the brightness of your environment image, using the multliplier you expect, i.e. 2.

If render GC is enabled, Poser is already doing that and so you would be using render anti-gamma 2.2 and shader anti-gamma 2.2, resulting in a total incoming anti-gamma = 4.84. This is not what you want as it will result in non-linear values in the middle. The goal is linear values.

But, if you don't actually make a change in the middle, the total equation is:

((Image ** (1/2.2) ** (1/2.2)) * 1) ** 2.2 ** 2.2 = Image

That's right - if you do nothing in the middle, between gamma-in and gamma-out, then the two values cancel out completely AND IT DOES NOT MATTER WHAT VALUE IS THERE.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)
