You could try setting a very narrow border around your main image, defining it as pure white and barely outside your area that you want to be opaque.
If you're starting from square one, make your main image into greyscale, then divide this on two layers of equal size, one being a pure black background, and the other being just your greyscale part of the transmapped image, then save as a jpeg when you get it where you want, opacity-wise. To me, trans maps and alpha maps are exactly the same thing, or share the same purpose with a different name.
