Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 29 7:57 am)
Well, there was also a problem with IDL and emitters. Just fixed. Daz isn't the only program out there that has bugs. I'll agree its had its fair share, but no software I've ever used was completely bug-free. It's happens, and no software is immune.
To me, it makes no sense to hold grudges for anything. It's not productive nor will it change anything. I was pissed just like anyone else when I found out the new figures wouldn't work in Poser but I'm OVER it. I'll be just as happy if I never get Genesis than if I do get Genesis. And if we do...bonus. I don't make it a point to be nasty because they have it and I don't.

That has nothing to do with the conversation you jumped in to. I was discussing DAZ's history of breaking plugins with updates.
The conversation wasn't about BUGS.
I'm not holding a grudge about anything. I simply refuse to do business with a company which I consider unethical.

Yeah, since Noon today. Wow!
So, were all of the scripts and plug-ins for Poser updated and ready on the day Poser 9/ Pro 2012 came out?

I know not about plugins, as I don't think I use any.

Laurie
I don't think anyone IS making it a pissing contest........just a discussion.
I hope for your sake, if you really want to use Genesis, that DAZ does the right thing by Poser users and gives them a figure to use.
But, in my opinion, DAZ has no intention of reliquinishing control of Genesis. They aren't going to give you the options they did with the Gen4 figures because they want complete control.
I don't see how my "opinion" constitutes a pissing contest.
Quote - I think they can give Poser users Genesis without reliquishing control. Whether they will or not is the question ;). I hate to see em expend energy to develop something that Poser people won't use. They want seamless. Daz will have to deliver that if they want Poser users to come on board.

I agree with every word.

And, what percentage of the ticket sales do we get?

I am a long way down the road and as far as Genesis is concerned I yet am in exactly the same place. I will be interested to see if the announcement actually measures up the reality but that alone will not change my position. The first thing I need to see is that Genesis can give me something I cannot already do in Poser. I have yet to see a render that I think, 'wow I wish I could do that' or to see a outfit that I WANT to use.
If some one can convince me that there is something that I can't already do then I need to know it will not take a great deal of jumping through hoops to get there.
I have been looking for all these wonderful advantages to be displayed to me since Genesis was launched and I am still waiting. I do understand there are some benefits for vendors and some for those who like to creating creatures but I am not a vendor and do not have a strong need for creatures.
When Poser 2012 came out I needed to be convinced that there were some things it could do that were better than Poser 2010. Then SM showed me SSS and I wanted it immediately. Someone needs to convince me that investment in Genesis is value for money. So even if the news is that the changes will send some people to heaven I will still want see some proof it will do the same for me, and in case history repeats I will probably wait along time even then, just in case Genesis becomes free.
I use Poser 13 on Windows 11 - For Scene set up I use a Geekcom A5 - Ryzen 9 5900HX, with 64 gig ram and 3 TB storage, mini PC with final rendering done on normal sized desktop using an AMD Ryzen Threadipper 1950X CPU, Corsair Hydro H100i CPU cooler, 3XS EVGA GTX 1080i SC with 11g Ram, 4 X 16gig Corsair DDR4 Ram and a Corsair RM 100 PSU . The desktop is in a remote location with rendering done via Queue Manager which gives me a clearer desktop and quieter computer room.

I've quited sticking with DAZ a long time ago..... I'm still waiting for their 'game changing' announcement. DAZ has used superlatives so often now without making it come true, that I don't even take note anymore. I'm already in heaven with Poser and I sure don't need Genesis for that. Sounds to me as if DAZ is loosing money because they've chased away the poser users and they're now desperately trying to stop more of them leaving.......

Hornet3d, DS4 isn't for long term users of either DS or Poser. Genesis isn't a solution for the end-user. It is a solution for DAZ.
We have already bought most of what DAZ has to sell, so naturally, we are spending less at DAZ. For example, I have about 150 V4 characters I have collected over V4's life span - I have stopped buying Gen 4 figures (well, except for any that Tony Puryear & 3rd degree put out.) I have all of the impractical armor and skankwear that I will ever need.
I am a dead customer to DAZ. With saturated runtimes and content developers that are out of ideas, who would genesis be aimed at?
It is for people new to the party.
Think about it,
If you are just starting out, with 1 figure (genesis) you now have access to all of the Gen4 figures, most of the Gen 3 figures - all of the genesis clothing you purchase will work on any of those figures. You will save a lot of money, and since genesis hasn't taken off at any other store, you will be spending most of your 3d content money at DAZ. This is a win-win from DAZ's perspective.
It is an elegant solution.
If I was just starting out and I didn't know DAZ's software development history, I'd be all over DS4. It is great for people that are starting out. For the grognards, not so much.
Quote - ......
The ability to repackage Gen4 characters, clothing, hair, and shoes for genesis is great for the vendors - I don't see the benefit for the end user. Why should I buy Tauran 2 when I already have Tauran 1, or classic rolled hair for genesis when I have classic rolled hair for V4 or grace pumps for genesis when I have grace pumps for V4, well you get the idea...........
Since it was my products directly mentioned.
If you truely believe this, you obviously have not even looked at the products.
They are obviously a totally different take on the minotaur look, one with a completely bull head the other with much more human facial features.
The texturing is only somewhat similar, enough so that both sets could be in the same scene and look like they fit in the same world, but that is where the similarities end.
It is definitely not a repeat of the same previous character.
Thank you very much!

I am not expecting much out of DAZ either. I doubt that DAZ is working on a "genesis in Poser" out of the goodnes of their hearts. It does tend to imply that they are missing our money.
I must admit, after reading Daz Burner's comment, I did start playing We are the champions by Queen.
Does that make me a bad person?

So you rag on DAZ about something without even knowing if it was the same situation with Poser. I don't think anyone is surprised at that.
By the way, no, not all the plug-ins and scripts were updated and ready when Poser 9/ Pro 2012 was released.

I still miss shader-spider from my old poser6. That was such a handy tool.

Sorry, RawArt, I did look at it and I truly believe it.
In my opinion, not enough differences (generally just a face morph) to spend another $12.95. I own (and use) Tauran for M4. If I was running DS4, I wouldn't have shelled out for Tauran 2, I would have used Tauran for M4 (along with the creature creator morphs) with genesis.

Actually a big difference: How easy is it to mix a child or female into the gen4 version and still get those hooves and horns to seamlessly stay conformed? I remember people asking for a female and kid versions of the Gen4 version and with this, you're pretty much set with that one purchase. The new version is much more flexible than the previous version if you're using your imagination. Also it's more than a morph as the legs are actually morphed into hooves rather than conforming the creature creator legs to it and actually hiding the legs and feet of M4. I'm sure you over looked that as well since you said it was only a face morph.

Say you have Tauren for M4. You Need GenX if you want it on Genesis. Not everyone owns GenX. Genx is still more expensive and you need it to do the conversion. So tauren2 is cheaper and the better choice and works out of the box. Plus its a nicer face morph with geografted horns and tail etc. So there are plenty of differences. That is my opinion. The chances of every user having Tauren for m4 and Genx is not that great.

Quote - Sure we can live without Daz. The last months have proved that. However, one thing remains true: Daz figures have always been more morphable, better looking and better supported than any other figures before or since. That's what made them so popular. Now, I'm no Daz cheerleader by any stretch, but lets be fair: until you had to install a separate program to use Genesis - even to get it into Poser - we were all on the Daz bandwagon. If Daz made Genesis work in Poser somehow, most of us would be all over it, including the current naysayers. Maybe not for awhile - even a long while - but eventually. I'm not saying anyone is gonna forgive or forget. But if the technology is better (not saying it is, but it may turn out to be so), then people are naturally gonna want better and more versitile if it is available to them and available at a price they can afford. So "never say never" LOL. We can't know what's down the road. This may all be something Daz may think is great for Poser users and turns out to be a dud for the average Poser user ;).
Laurie
QFT. As much as I hate to admit it, and despite all the problems and the fact that the vendors had to fix them, DAZ did put a lot of effort into their characters. More so than anyone else I can think of off the top of my head.
And I think that's what pissed us all off the most.
WARK!
Thus Spoketh Winterclaw: a blog about a Winterclaw who speaks from time to time.
(using Poser Pro 2014 SR3, on 64 bit Win 7, poser units are inches.)
I think they're a little overrating Genesis's appeal. If they make it available I may use it some, but it certainly won't replace the Gen4 figures in my runtime. For one thing, I find the way Genesis bends absolutely unnerving, especially the elbows--it's like rubber. Even K4's bad joints don't look so unnerving. I'm far more looking forward to GND Tyler. Still, if offered at a reasonable enough price and made high-poly to actually look decent in Poser and offered in a native Poser format and bundled with enough content at a reasonable price to get me started, I might give it a chance. But then again, with Xameva and Meipe's fixes I have V4 looking so nice, and with their plans to fix M4, and with Anastasia and Tyler, I'm not sure why I'd need Genesis except perhaps for some interesting creatures (mainly by RawArt) and Luthbel's clothes. Which brings me to: maybe the one good thing that could come of this would be to make it easier to convert Genesis clothes to M4. I'd really like Luthbel's Highlander and Corsair for M4.
Quote - I think they're a little overrating Genesis's appeal.
I think you may be right. I've never been that impressed with Genesis and have not seen anything that couldn't be done with the characters already available for Poser (for my type of use anyway). However, I obtained V5/M5 free on a magazine and decided to try it out in DS4. I also took it into Poser with just the regular exporter thingy. (It was definitely better in its native DS4 home.) I even made a dress for Genesis just to see what the process was like and to use the content creation tools so I think I gave it a fair trial. My conclusion was that it was over-rated and I haven't used it since.
Would I use it in the future? It is difficult to say. Maybe if was usuable without having to use DS in any step, was free and came with free content and morphs (which make it useable) I might (but might not) give it another try but I'm in no hurry and would not be upset if it never worked in Poser.
I would be delighted for those who have lusted after it for so long if it worked natively in Poser but for me it is definitely over-rated, especially considering the other characters that have now become available. However, I am also delighted that Genesis exists because due to its existence we have seen some remarkable innovations in the Poser community which may not have happened otherwise. In the end I think everyone wins.
Regarding heaven - I think it will be the staff at Daz who will be in heaven if Genesis worked well in Poser for obvious reasons.

Quote - Auto-shit = Auto-fit, which works like shit in DS4.5.
Don't get me wrong, I would love to get V5 to work in Poser with weight mapping. But bringing V5 in as Genesis, then having to fit clothes with smoothting, because the V5 and Genesis shapes are too far apart, IS NOT going to work.
I purchased DS4 when it first came out, then went to Poser Pro 2012 after DAZ started giving their product away.

I think you are spot on and that seamless is the key word here. v4/m4 and their counterparts worked seamlessly. Many of us do this as a hobby for fun, at least I know I do. I really don't want to have to go through an export process to get a low res figure to use, but if Daz is developing something I doubt that they would be planning on another low res low functionality project when there is already that option. I would hope if their developers have any clear sense of how this market is being driven that they will make something that works seamlessly in Poser if they want to capture that part of the market.
"People who attempt define what art is or is not, are not artists"---Luminescence
Let me show another side of just how brilliant the concept of genesis is.
When V4 came out, what incentives existed to get new users to purchase Gen3 content.
None.
With the release of iconic shapes, Gen3 content can be used with Genesis - So what happens? New users of DS4 that would have NEVER given a thought to any Gen3 content, can now add them to their runtimes. There was a lot of really good content in Gen3, now items that haven't sold many copies for years suddenly have a brand new audience. And I suspect that they are combing through the Gen3 content and grabbing the best that Gen3 had to offer.
And this is where the second issue comes in.
As I pointed out to RawArt, since I owned Tauran 1, I didn't feel that Tauran 2 added enough to justify the price. If I didn't own Tauran 1 and the M4 Creature Creator morphs, then yes Tauran 2 would be a better product, but I already have a really good product in Tauran 1.
This is going to be more of an issue going forward, with both characters and clothing. If I own a good suit for M4, for me to buy a second suit, it has to either be a lot better or offer more options for me to purchase. Whoever makes that suit has to up the bar, by a lot.
If I was using DS4 - From what I understand Autofit will convert a non-genesis product to something that genesis can use - Now M3, M4 & M5 can wear it. In my case, any male suit is competing against the Casablanca Suit for M3 - It must be a better product than that - It has to have more movement morphs and it must have better and more textures available for it before I would purchase it.
Since I use Poser, I can run the Casablanca Suit through Wardrobe Wizard or Xdresser to use with all of my figures, and if necessary, I can add additional character morphs with the Morphing Clothes program.
The capabilites of Autofit - Wardrobe Wizard - Xdresser have a real potential to hit vendors really hard. This isn't a genesis issue - this is a DS/Poser issue. It affects both communities in the exact same manner.
Neither of these methods are 100% perfect, but quite frankly, most people aren't looking for 100% perfection, they are perfectly happy to settle for a 70% solution.
So as people get a really good product for each type of clothing, the second item in that clothing category has be be a lot better to get people to buy it. In economic terms, what is the added value of the second item and when do you reach the point of diminishing returns. Or as I liked to ask vendors towards the end of the Gen4 era:
"I have a lot of skankwear for V4, why should I buy yours?"
I don't have a solution to this quandry, but I am thinking real hard on it.
The best I have come up with is that vendors should start to look at something like kickstarter for their projects - If they don't meet their funding goals, the product doesn't get made - and it forces potential buyers to put their money where their mouths are and helps the vendors develop products that pay for themselves.
For my particular needs and rendering interest, Genesis is perfect for me, I mean PERFECT, and I really like DazStudio, the interface is great, it's comfortable to work with, BUT, I love Poser even more, and Poser Pro 2012 SR3 is heaven, I'm so confortable in Poser, with EZSkin and the rest of the plugins I use, that as much as I try to get into DazStudio, I just keep falling back to Poser, and liking it even more.
However, like I said, Genesis is great for my needs, I love rendering and creating all sort of creatures, monsters and were-beasts, so the ability to morph those creatures and make them male or female, adult or child, it's something I can't do with Gen4 figures without a lot of work (texture conversion, morph injection hacks, clothing conversion, etc).
Multiple UV mapping is great, geografting is great (I've been redering four armed creatures since I have Poser and only on Genesis arms can truly blend with the rest of the body without postwork). As much as I love WM-V4, she can do none of that :(
So yes, I can, and have, lived without Genesis, but I can't hide my excitement on the posibility of getting such a versatile figure inside my favorite application.
I understand however, how someone who renders regular human characters would be a lot less excited about it, since Genesis doesn't offer that much more on that front, it's just another figure, and there's some great alternatives out there.
