I finally am home and installed SR3.  I have a scene that I use to test hardware with IDL, SSS and transparency; it gets the CPU into the mid 50 degrees C range.  It renders in 25:47 in SR2, and 27:04 in SR3, so it's not a huge difference.  There are some subtle differences in the shadows, but no major differences betwen the two renders...
