In brief, during 1973, Filmation (the animation studio probably best known for "He-Man" and "Fat Albert") released a cartoon adaptation of Star Trek that was overseen by Gene Roddenberry and DC Fontana, starred 6 of the original cast, with scripts from several of the original series writers.
Taking advantage of the medium, 2 exotically "alien" crew members were introduced, Arex, a 3 legged, 3 armed "Edoan", and M'Ress, a being sharing certain attributes with those of terrestrial felines. They weren't treated as "comical mascots" (ala Scooby Doo)but simply as crew. Because so little was done with the new characters, that mystery gained the interest of some viewers (like moi) over the years.
Attached is the one shot that came closest in appearance to the original character design sheets. (The art and coloring tended to vary between shots due to the insane schedule Filmation had to endure.) I'll leave it for you to decide if the hair Ali released resembles the cartoon art.
Sincerely,
Bill
Thanks for the explaination. I barely recall the cartoon series. I saw it for sale as a DVD collection in Best Buy awhile back and should have bought it. I recall it was not cheap. I like the new render too.
