Let me show another side of just how brilliant the concept of genesis is.
When V4 came out, what incentives existed to get new users to purchase Gen3 content.
None.
With the release of iconic shapes, Gen3 content can be used with Genesis - So what happens? New users of DS4 that would have NEVER given a thought to any Gen3 content, can now add them to their runtimes. There was a lot of really good content in Gen3, now items that haven't sold many copies for years suddenly have a brand new audience. And I suspect that they are combing through the Gen3 content and grabbing the best that Gen3 had to offer.
And this is where the second issue comes in.
As I pointed out to RawArt, since I owned Tauran 1, I didn't feel that Tauran 2 added enough to justify the price. If I didn't own Tauran 1 and the M4 Creature Creator morphs, then yes Tauran 2 would be a better product, but I already have a really good product in Tauran 1.
This is going to be more of an issue going forward, with both characters and clothing. If I own a good suit for M4, for me to buy a second suit, it has to either be a lot better or offer more options for me to purchase. Whoever makes that suit has to up the bar, by a lot.
If I was using DS4 - From what I understand Autofit will convert a non-genesis product to something that genesis can use - Now M3, M4 & M5 can wear it. In my case, any male suit is competing against the Casablanca Suit for M3 - It must be a better product than that - It has to have more movement morphs and it must have better and more textures available for it before I would purchase it.
Since I use Poser, I can run the Casablanca Suit through Wardrobe Wizard or Xdresser to use with all of my figures, and if necessary, I can add additional character morphs with the Morphing Clothes program.
The capabilites of Autofit - Wardrobe Wizard - Xdresser have a real potential to hit vendors really hard. This isn't a genesis issue - this is a DS/Poser issue. It affects both communities in the exact same manner.
Neither of these methods are 100% perfect, but quite frankly, most people aren't looking for 100% perfection, they are perfectly happy to settle for a 70% solution.
So as people get a really good product for each type of clothing, the second item in that clothing category has be be a lot better to get people to buy it. In economic terms, what is the added value of the second item and when do you reach the point of diminishing returns. Or as I liked to ask vendors towards the end of the Gen4 era:
"I have a lot of skankwear for V4, why should I buy yours?"
I don't have a solution to this quandry, but I am thinking real hard on it.
The best I have come up with is that vendors should start to look at something like kickstarter for their projects - If they don't meet their funding goals, the product doesn't get made - and it forces potential buyers to put their money where their mouths are and helps the vendors develop products that pay for themselves.
