Subject: Slightly OT Challenge idea

mysticeagle ( ) posted Sun, 16 September 2012 at 4:11 AM · edited Sat, 30 November 2024 at 6:43 PM

It seems nobody reads the challenge thread anymore lol, so i thought i'd give it a go here...

Just an idea for a non sponsored friendly sorta challenge...........

if there are enough people interested,

a. we pick a genre

b. each person is allocated a random letter of the alphabet

c. then they must create a PROP or FIGURE that begins with that letter (no previously modelled items can be used)

d. We set a simple timescale, say 7 days

e. at the end of the 7 days we are each given each others models, each person gets one of each

f. we then have say another 7 days to render or composite an image containing every prop/figure that has been made.

Maybe we are allowed one mainstream figure to use along side it..........

The winner gets the huge privilege of adding to their signature the title of "Unofficial Modelling Render Challenge Winner (insert month here) (insert year here)" :woot:

As many participants as are interested would be fine with me... I like cramming a lot of stuff in my Poser scenes

But 5 is a good number of items to start, if that's our lot 👍

How are you thinking of picking the genre? Take it you'll just pick the letters out a hat for us all Neil?

😉

ghonma ( ) posted Mon, 17 September 2012 at 4:17 AM

A generic theme like 'space' or 'history' or 'toy' should work nicely IMO, that way we'll have a lot of things to choose from. And we could have it so that the winner gets to pick for the next challenge and so on.

We could also do directed themes, eg say we choose a superhero theme, we could then be asked to make gadgets for him starting with various alphabets or maybe costumes in different colors etc...

thats fine by me guys if you are happy with the numbers, History sounds as good a genre as any, plenty of scope there, now we come to the random letter generator for the first letter of your model.

To keep it fair i have used http://www.randomlettergenerator.com/

Here are the results in no particular order...

Monkeycloud                             J

Ghonma                                    M

Mysticeagle                               H

Shvrdavid                                 K

pokeydots                                R

now how about time line....any suggestions, 7 days? longer for stage 1 the modelling?

if you think the random letter idea is too restrictive let me know, i just thought it might save too much duplication in the models made.

Personally, the deadline'll probably need to be longer than 7 days for the modelling stage... at least if its 7 days from today. If we could call it 14 days from today, would be better?

Cheers 😉

Thanks for those links monkeycloud... so do we post WIPs or just the end model or what ? In this thread ?

monkeycloud ( ) posted Mon, 17 September 2012 at 5:35 AM

Yeah, also, should we say upfront what we are going to model, or keep shtoom and reveal that once it's finished?

mysticeagle ( ) posted Mon, 17 September 2012 at 5:49 AM

keep it under your hat until we exchange models, then we can post a small pic of our models in the thread, so the lurkers can see what we are up to, or up against ;)

14 days sounds fine Chris for the modelling stage, we can sort out the render challenge once we are ready to start............I don't know if you guys have a drop box account but it might be an ideal place for us to deposit and mutually exchange the models when we are ready....

I think we agreed the modelling deadline was Monday. So you're probably too late? Mysticeagle is master of ceremonies... I will defer to him.

Northern Renaissance sounds like a good theme for the next one to me... or at least the next theme could perhaps encompass that one? Although it would have been encompassed within our current theme too...

primorge ( ) posted Sat, 29 September 2012 at 5:02 AM

Try to convince the winner to initiate another one, monkeycloud. It's definitely piqued my interest, although I feel a little snooty about the trading models thing... suppose that lends to the collaborative camaraderie challenge aspect, though.

mysticeagle ( ) posted Sat, 29 September 2012 at 11:39 AM

i'll be sending the dropbox link to you all on monday morning, didnt want any sneak peaking before the end of the challenge. If primorge wants in, he is welcome, and has 48 hours to produce a "History" themed model beginning with the Letter "N". The more the merrier and the more fun the renders will be ;)

Hi Pokeydots

You'd need to register your email address (as login) and a password for Dropbox, I think, to be able to upload etc, to that folder that Mystic has shared (it's free, unless you wanted to increase storage on your account).

Did you do that and still no access?

You'll need to access the Dropbox folder to download the other folks models for stage 2 of the competition (to render a scene with all the models in it).
