Ive always thought that "Hey ,a 30 frame or so sim, isn't going to cost me much time", to see how it fits, often it's a damn sight quicker than scouring the freebies for an outfit that suits. Scaling is important obviously, but very often i will just get the y axis correct, even if the body pokes through the dress round the boobs and hips and then let the cloth stretch during the sim. I very often use philc's cloth settings on a sim if it doesnt fit just right, it dials in all those fiddly stretchy, resistance settings for you.
