I wouldn't bother with an expensive calibrator unless I were making prints on my own printer.

Unless everyone else is using the same calibration tools, perfecting the calibration on your own monitor only ensures your machine displays the images correctly (that is, in line with what you'll get if you print). Almost no one else's machine will be calibrated properly, so you'd STILL suffer from people saying this is too dark, this is too bright, etc, but you'd have spent a lot of money just to know the problem isn't you, but them.

A huge number of people are displaying the web on laptop LCDs -- which pretty much universally suck -- or tablets, which tend to grossly oversaturate.

Anyway, trying to correct for everyone else's display is an exercise in complete futility, IMO.
