I put it in the main program folder of Poser.  That's where I put the starter essential stuff.  Should I put it in an external runtime and then name it Genesis?

Yes, but I would defintely uninstall them first and then reinstall them to you new Genesis folder. You should never put content into the Poser 9/Pro program folder. There is a folder in Documents (if you have Win7/Vista) that contains all the Poser content.
