Subject: Reality Render thread. A new beginning.

Just ordered a FX-8350 to swap out the FX-8120 I'm using at the moment. No doubt I'll be putting that somewhere as well.

How do I set the DPI in Reality? I wanted something bigger than the standard web size because I'm going to print it.

Reggie68 ( ) posted Wed, 07 November 2012 at 4:31 PM

DPI is dots per inch and refers to printers. Doesn't mean a lot in Reality.

You need to know what PPI (pixels per inch) you want, this changes with the optimum distance the print is viewed from.

A billboard poster could have a different PPI than a magazine advert but may have the same number of pixels.

To change the PPI, you just have to do the math.

Image size = physical size (inches) * desired PPI

So if you want a 6"x 4" photo at 200PPI, you want to render at 1200 x 800 pixels. For a 10x8 it would be 2000 x 1600 pixels.

I would suggest that you do some research on the settings people have used to print images similar to your desired result and go from there.

Quote - Been in a Star Wars mood since the big news last week (still not sure how I feel about that news).

If anyone knows where to find some decent Star Wars freebies please share. Haven't been having much luck with that.  I found a nice looking Stormtrooper outfit but it's a major pain in the ass to get it to fit to any characters.

There's quite a few scattered around shareCG, like this one http://www.sharecg.com/v/48524/View/11/Poser/Scout-Trooper-Armour

Also the rebel x-wing suit is there as well as Han's belt and blaster, and some misc weapons. I believe I have a link to a magnificent star destroyer model somewhere, but fair warning, it imports HUGE in studio. I'll post when I find it.

Never used any of them, but we had a good line around page 21-27 in this thread on doing the light saber effect. I think John even loaded up some proper modeled blade props and matty manx did several light sabre models.

Thank you for the answer, Reggie68.

I now have a new problem.  This has never happened before.  I'm trying to render a scene and lux crashed and froze my machine.  I restarted and then did a cold boot.  I tried to render again, this time taking a lot of the things out of the scene.  Nothing ever shows up in the render screen, it's just black.  My efficiency is only at 17%, I'm usually at 800 to high 900's. I tried again, this time at 50% output.  Again, nothing.  I shut everything down again and reopened Daz and reloaded the scene.  This time at 50% it started to render. I terminated the render, set the output to 100% and...again I got nothing but black.  I've turned the settings up to 1000 and 1/4.  The efficiency stays down at 17%.  Not hing seems to effect it, nothing ever shows in the render screen.  I am running Lux .9 I think.

Any ideas what is wrong?  Did I accidentally change something that would cause things to behave this way?  If so, what could it be?  Should I start using the current stable build? It's 1.0 if I remember correctly.  I've tried for several hours now and can't get this scene to render.  I created a new scene with just a naked genesis figure in it and it rendered just fine.  Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

What are you using for cooling? I've noticed core temp is touching 70C at full load, since Win7 was optimised for the FX-81xx processors.

Mild overclock to 4.2 ghz with artic cooler 7.

Win 7 has had a few updates since the 81xx release.  Initially Win 7 could only manage around 70% full load.  Now its 100%, but temps have reflected the increase.

I'll try an Artic cooling 13.

try having task manager open before you send it to lux to render and watch to see how much memory it is trying to use.. if it uses all your memory and then starts using the hard disk swap file it will slow to a crawl...

Getting out of all the tech talk with this mornings produce from the render oven.  Just did a wee bit of tweaking to Callad's Neve character.  Simple render in a cube.  Only thing different than normal is I took Paolo's advice and used a single mesh light with a reflector behind the character.  Made a discernable difference with the quality of the lighting in the render.  I'm going to play around a lot more with reflectors and lighting as that is what I always need to tweak in my renders.

I use the Artic Cooling Freezer 13Pro on the 8120. It's on a linux box (@100% on all cores) but I think CPU temperatures are being reported incorectly as they peak at around 40C at stock speeds. You need a large case for it though.

I also have a X4 965 Black with the Freezer 7 in my Win7 box, not too sure on temp but I thiink it hits 50C max last time I monitored.

I've got a coolermaster hyper 212 evo on my fx 8150 and have had it clocked for a solid 24hrs w/o any heat issues.  At this point, only the heat sink and 2 120mm case fans on the box.  Plus psu fan.  I'm pretty happy with this setup.

AbiJ ( ) posted Thu, 08 November 2012 at 12:16 PM

My 8120 @4.6ghz has an Koolance CPU-360 waterblock, Laing DDC pump, XSPC dual bay resi and a 480x120 radiator, running occt (stress test) after 5 hours core temps read 48°c, cpu (socket) temp 59°c (max stated temp is 62° for the fx chip).  My 965's all have XSPC RASA waterlocks, DDC pumps, XSPC dual bay resi's and 360x120 radiators - not really checked the full load temps on them though.  Needless to say, I won't be neading the central heating swithed on this winter!

No.. I don't have Win 8... I'm not entirely sure what the problem is. I just know that sometimes after I've set up a scene I click to call reality and it doesn't load... Sometimes it will go as far as to change to the material settings pane, sometimes it doesn't even do that... I have uninstalled Daz Studio, reinstalled.. uninstalled reality, reinstalled.. latest versions of both... although I think I am behind a version now.. it came out after my problems had already started.  I check the log files and generally there is nothing to do with reality at all in them... or there is but no sign of errors... I have had some success with cleaning out files with ccleaner and rebooting.  The processes in the task manager do always show a second instance of daz studio running when I have attempted to call reality... I've done tests with a simple sphere and one light when I've had the problem and it still won't work.. So its pretty much a crap shoot whether I'm going to be able to call reality or not.  I'm not willing to reformat my hard drive, so I'm sort of at a loss.... and reaquainting myself with Bryce somewhat when I feel any creativity coming on.

I like the choice of B&W for this.  Having said that, his face and shirt are a bit over-exposed. Nice composition though.

BTW, is that Mustang a 3D model, or is it a backdrop?

I use my mainboard utillity for core temp. AMDs utillity is not callibrated correctly on my system.

The 8150 auto throttles Ghz at 75C to avoid blue screen/crash.  But if your not monitoring, it will be unnoticed.

The problem I've experienced is that it takes over 10 mins to reach that state, with no aparent indication or stabillity issues.

The only way to spot it is by monitoring CPU parameters at full load and look for auto throttle.

I had to reset all of my Reality settings after a refomat due to the fact the my previous saved scenes loaded with more then 1/2 textures missing. Reloading the studio texture would fix the issue but there was so much missing in some scenes it was easier to delete the Reality data and redo it. It worked out the surface for the machine gizmo came out much better then the 1st time anyhow.

My 8120 diesn't throttle back even if you run it over a full day, you can tell as the sample rate returned by the slave doesn't change. Spped wise it is returns around 120kS/s when the X4 965 is at 100kS/s on the same scene.

Also got the 8350 and replaced the 8120 with the 8350 and it was returning samples at around 205kS/s. Again no cooling or slowdown issues with the 13Pro over 4 hours.

CPU load was showing 100% on all cores.

I ordered a 13 pro anyway, plus a 14cm Viper s-flow fan to replace the case top exhaust.

In the bios, disable amd cool & quiet, c1e, c6 state etc, if you are overclocking as they can all effect the stability, one of those is causing the throttling.
