I think Snarlygribbly's subdivider is great for this type of application.

Obviously you'd only want to subdivide the more foreground grass props, I guess.

But, if you consider that you are using the grass prop you're thinking of subdividing as a significant / primary feature... you've probably got scope to add a few polys to your scene for such an aspect?
