I have found that a variety of things can cause this. First thing I would look at is the "crease angle" under your properties tag for the object. Try decreasing the Cr untill the issue clears up, you may have to go down as low as 10 or 20. Sometimes its an issue with the mesh. If thats the case you can bring it into your modeling program and try futher subdividing the mesh and flattening each plane
