We need to TRAIN the security people to look for seriously suspicious behavior, explosives, and potential biological weapons. These should all trigger major reactions. Guns and knives shouldn't be a concern - each flight should either have an armed Air Marshal, armed flight crews, or both. Yes, there is a risk that a stray bullet will take out the plane, but I think that risk is easier to take than the risk of another plane being flown into a major population center or national landmark. And any passengers who want to carry weapons - and have any relevant licenses and such - should be allowed to do so. That will discourage a terrorist more than anything else, IMO, the thought that "I've got a gun, but so do half of the other passengers"... {Though I usually subscribe to the Way of Weatherwax (a good friend of Ms. Cosmopolite)} Heh.
