Windows 7 still has quite a few number of years of support left from Microsoft.  Windows XP has one more year of support, I believe.  No reason to get Windows 8 unless you have software/hardware that just won't run on Windows 7.

From the Microsoft site: "Support for Windows XP is ending on April 8, 2014."

Actually, I thought support for XP had already expired sometime this past spring or summer.
