It's a technique I use a lot when making colour schemes for me Dalek models. I can save out bits like eye lenses, retina glow, neck mesh, lamp glass and anything else that's common to all models. After that, I use a simple "Apply to all" command to change body colour, then apply the mc6 for all the other bits and bobs. I also have several different ones for the hemis so I can mix and match as I go.
A real time saver and sometimes it's worth saving just a single material as a mc6, simply because you know it's going to apply correctly every time.
