Subject: The "Download All The Files At The Same Time" button

smallspace ( ) posted Wed, 22 May 2013 at 7:48 PM · edited Fri, 13 December 2024 at 12:34 PM

This has to be the stupidest this thing Smithmicro has ever done. 5 gigs of files and everyone trying to download them as parallel streams. Ridiculous! Why did they create a button to download files in parallel instead of serial? I've spent the last day trying to download Pro 2014 one file at a time. I hit the download for one of the files. It starts downloading at about 600 KPS. Ten seconds later, it's down to 100 KPS. Another ten seconds it's down to 20 KPS. If I hit pause, then resume, it might be a little better or even worse, depending on how I did in the "Server Lottery".

Do us all a favor. If you are one of the ones trying to download all the files at the same time...stop! Download one file then move on to the next. You can bet it'll go faster for all of us!

I'd rather stay in my lane than lay in my stain!

Do us a favor, take your whining over to the RNDA forum.  The folks who made the product are over there.

Parallel or serial, the servers have been getting hammered since Monday night.

Does it really matter if there's a button? Wouldn't people just start a download for each anyhow?

That's what I did.  I posted there what a big pain in the ass the whole purchase and download process was; not that I expect a response; they have my money already.

I posted some of my issues with DSON in PP2014 over at DAZ, too...

Naw. I think I'll stay right here where I've been since the beginning...before the beginning, actually, which should tell you I'm old and crotchety and deserve some respect when I grumble.

Perhaps the blame isn't full SmithMicro's, but your ISP?

I started downloading, one file at a time on Monday night, and was done by Tuesday evening (mind, there was a roughly 8-hour period where I was sleeping in there), with average speeds of about 143 kb/s.

"Perhaps the blame isn't full SmithMicro's, but your ISP?"

Hmm...

Any way to download to a computer other than the one on which it's going to be installed? The download manager seems to be pretty draconian about wanting to handle both the download and the install.

Check the folder hierarchy for the downloads at bottom of the Download Manager. You can find the downloads and transfer them.

I downloaded in the early hours of the morning (6am UK time) a few hours after after it apparently went on sale and it took just over the hour.  Sort of suggests that the download manager is not the problem but maybe the popularity is, well for those downloading it is.

I use Poser 13 on Windows 11 - For Scene set up I use a Geekcom A5 -  Ryzen 9 5900HX, with 64 gig ram and 3 TB  storage, mini PC with final rendering done on normal sized desktop using an AMD Ryzen Threadipper 1950X CPU, Corsair Hydro H100i CPU cooler, 3XS EVGA GTX 1080i SC with 11g Ram, 4 X 16gig Corsair DDR4 Ram and a Corsair RM 100 PSU .   The desktop is in a remote location with rendering done via Queue Manager which gives me a clearer desktop and quieter computer room.

I decided to wait a bit longer than the download would have likely taken and went postal instead... hopefully it won't get eaten by my dog when it comes through the letterbox...

...oh gawd. That scenario hadn't actually occurred to me till now!!!

Anyway, after the last XCode download I went through I thought I'd give my internet a rest for a bit...

I started it around 10pm Tuesday night, and it didn't complete until about 6pm Wednesday evening.  I stopped it twice when it looked like I was getting about 8k/s per file, but it would jump always jump up to about 80-100k/s whenever I resumed the downloading.

smallspace - at the risk of trying to appear helpful it could be a problem with your TCP config not being able to deal with dropped packets. If you're not adverse to changing the network config have a look at your computer's congestion algroithm to see if there is a better one for dealing with dropped packets (sometimes slower is faster)

Here's an update.

I started out by taking my computer to a friend's house. I did this because I live out in the boonies and my only service available is satellite (ViaSat) and has a monthly download limit that simply won't allow me to download all 5 gigs of Poser Pro 2014.

My friend uses a provider that sets up a dish that taps into the nearest cell tower. That service gives my friend unlimited upload/download and speed that lets him live-stream movies and TV while his wife is surfing and his 3 boys are all playing on-line video games. I thought that would be my best solution. It wasn't...download speeds dipping under 1kps and frequent "Download Interrupted" messages. It's at this point a wrote my angry rant.

After that, I took my computer home, hooked it back up to the satellite and went ahead and downloaded the smallest file in the install. Sure enough. I got a consistent 200kps and the file loaded in about 15 minutes. Unfortunately, that brought me to 82% of my monthly limit.

OK, here's the kicker...

I called ViaSat/Wild Blue to see if I could upgrade my service without it costing me an arm and a leg. You know what they said?

"Why, sure! Right now we're upgrading anyone one of our older Wild Blue customers who asks to our new "exede" service on our new satellite...with absolutely "FREE of charge" installation and at no additional monthly fee!"

Well now, it turns out the exede service is about 5 times faster than my current Wild Blue, has an extra 3 gigs of monthly bandwidth, and...wait for it...has unlimited, unrestricted downloading between midnight and 5 a.m.!

The installer will be out Saturday afternoon. I think I can wait till Sunday morning to download the rest of the installation.

So it turns out that this was all a good thing. If it hadn't happened, I may never have known about the free upgrade!

I'd rather stay in my lane than lay in my stain!

my ISP gives me 12Mbit/sec and that was fully utilized.

Usually, it's all the other Internet users who kill your available bandwidth, so you might want to stop them while downloading.

Just click the button at http://www.turnofftheinternet.com/
(I guess Sam knows this one too)

Usually I'm wrong. But to be effective and efficient, I don't need to be correct or accurate.

visit www.aRtBeeWeb.nl (works) or Missing Manuals (tutorials & reviews) - both need an update though
