I dont like the pm by staff for advertising either, so I just delete them. 

I used to make checking pm my first task at rendo, not so much now.

I believe that With the banner ads, sidebar ads, forum posts and weekly newsletter the pms seems like overkill.  I suppose if you consider it site mail rather than private message it makes more sense.
