Firstly, it will slowdown your render; secondly, do feathers, realistically and naturally, have significantly SSS occurring? I can understand the underlying skin, if visible, and closeups. But middle- to background imaging, it may not make a difference. It might mean unnecessary render sampling and time.
I am looking to get that light play in the feather that happens when the wings are outstretched and the sun/moon is behind them. Though the hair setting isnt reallly doing it. I think though I will play with it abit.
