Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 29 7:57 am)
I think I'll stay with Poser, thankyouverymuch.
I know my way around Studio a bit, even bought the old rigging tools when they were really, really expensive, but I hate how everything is hidden away in sub-menus.
I also hate all the clutter Studio installs, including some services that even use up CPU when it's closed.
If I happen to create something really popular for Dawn that's worthy making it 100% DAZ compatible, too, I could still hire me some DAZ minions who do the conversion work for me.
;-)
Quote - I would like some more technical details.
How she will look on my HD will depend on my Hexagon morphing.
Same here. I want to know from a technical standpoint what makes her great. She looks nice, but looks like that can be duplicate with current figures. I want to know what makes her different to V4 or Genesis1&2 figures. Does she bend better? Can she be morphed with ease? Is her topology any good and what are the limitations? Can she switch and use multiple existing UV's or content from previous figures? Convince me why I should invest. So far Genesis2 is the benchmark from a technical standpoint. Being just another figure is not enough as a selling point to me. There needs to be a special factor, and so far no info of such a feature has been mentioned to get me excited. What can she do that V4 and Genesis cannot? And to Poser users V4 is still the benchmark figure, even if 7 years old. If Dawn is just a pretty shapeface I am not interested. People can already make those with what figures are currently available which already has lots of content support. If I am to start all over on a new figure, and buy all new content for it, I need to know why I should. Not to rain on anybody's parade, but as a content maker I need to know the pro's and cons before I consider investment on a new platform. I have seen too many figures come and go, because they didn't offer anything new or simply failed to capture the markets interest. Can this figure do that? If so, then how?
Dawn's creators are answering questions in the stickied thread in Freestuff.
At the moment, you don't need to invest anything. She's free. Or will be when she's available. Which I'm guessing will be next week.
Supposedly, she bends really, really well. She's got more polys than Genesis 2, but fewer than V4 - she's meant to be used with SubD. They plan to have conversion utilities so Dawn will be able to use the clothing and textures you already have for other figures.
With Dawn, they wanted to start over from scratch. To make a figure for today's Poser and DS. (She's weightmapped, so users of older versions of Poser are out of luck.) The idea is a figure that works equally well in Poser and DS. There will be two separate figures, but, they claim, it will be much easier to support both. Supporting V4 and V5 now takes a lot of work, because they are two different figures. Dawn is the same figure.
Well I need to see how well those poly's are distributed. I have seen figures where stupid amounts of poly's have been wasted in non important areas. So until I can get my hands on the mesh itself, I will just have to reserve judgement of what it can do. I only get excited once I actually have the figure infront of me and can make my own assesment. I don't buy into hype from anybody else.
I'll reserve final judgement, too, until I have seen the mesh topology and tested how well she's actually rigged in Poser.
But...given Chris Creek's experience with mesh topology I doubt there will be too many wasted polygons.
And given the fact that she and her male companion are the exact same mesh, I'm sure the mesh will have the correct topology for anatomical correct muscularity that is properly defined.
Genesis I and II have a fantastic mesh topology layout, but are simply too low for detailed sculpts in Poser.
Dawn has 39.000 polys, that's 19.000 more than Genesis' 20.000.
And these 19.000 polygons more could be exactly what makes the difference between an "OK-ish" figure and a great one.
(My own hybrids have 41.000 polys, and I guess there are a few wasted ones among them because I didn't want to break backwards compatibility)
As I said, I first have to see the mesh, but given the creator, I'm pretty optimistic I won't be dissapointed.
No doubt he is a great modeller, but I mainly want to look at the mesh for flexability. What can and cannot be done and see where the limitations lie if any.
Quote - If these companies are so afraid or against the nude body... why are they even doing a human character for Poser in the first place.... the whole body should be available.. there are many user filters they could put on their website so people/educators/minors who don't need/want nudity wouldn't see those products or body parts.... let artists decide how to use the characters we buy and quit pushing your morals on us. I just wish these companies were in Copenhagen or someplace where the human body is appreciated.
While I wholeheartedly agree about the "pushing other's moral on us", believe me, you would NOT want the company to be based in copenhagen ;) The cost would prohibit any ordinary people of buying their models ;)
Another matter with the whole nudity/porn issue is that some companiues, such as Paypal have some rather peculiar views on what they will allow people to buy. And IMO it's important for a company to be able to accept Paypal. Not everyone has a credit card, but most have a bank account that can be used to fuel a Paypal account :)
I know of a PoserPrawn store that at some time solved the "no porn" clause of Paypal's by selling gift certificates to the store. Those could then be used to buy the pornish content. An extra hoop for the customer, but a viable way, if the nudity becomes an issue.
In short.. the whole payment thing MAY set some clause for content that the store owner isn't necessarily sharing :)

I'm not saying you can't SubD V1 or any mesh you want.
They just where not modeled to be SubDed.
Rex & Rox's was modeled to be SubDed.You can tell a mesh that was modeled for SubD buy looking at the mesh.
The mesh will be 100% quads ,no tri's.
Tri's pinch when SubDed.

You know, in reality, EVERY business pushes its morals on you. Some just have more lax standards than others. Truth is, unless they're a monopoly, you're still free to choose who to do business with if you don't like their morals.
Quote - I understand the theory but-oddly enough-V4 subdivides-and I see no artifacts when rendering.

V4 60,000 polycount is 100% quads.she's a SubD mesh for fussions Max,C4D etc
V3 60,000 polycount had tri's. Max,C4D ect ect users don't accept tri's.
It's considered bad modelling.they pintch.

Thing is.. although neither Daz nor Rosity ect are a real monopoly, they do have a de facto monopoly anyway. It's a kind of take it or leave it - and if you leave it, you're left with no alternative, unless you can model your own.
And I DO think it's hypocritical to make human figures and omit their human bits. Especially claiming that they're for "educational purposes"
But that's just me. I've spent too much time in Copenhagen and vicinity ;)

Every one has there two cent oppions.
Mine's 40,000 polycount SubD mesh is a bit on the heavy side.
But DAZ,Poser don't use zBrush Displacement maps very much cause they have one mesh that morphs in to everything. So I get why the 40,000 polycount SubD mesh.
I like M5,V5 20,000 polycount meshes.it's like what we use in C4D ,Max etc etc
I never cared for M4,V4 60,000 polycount meshes.Didn't use them.

You know, funny thing is that the porn industry makes that very same claim.
I'm not so much bothered about Dawn's lack of genitals rather than about her male companion.
Stylized female genitalia for simple nudes can be made with a magnet or two from the base mesh and detailed ones need an add-on prop for all the inner bits anyway.
But unless 3rd party male genitals copy exactly the UV-mapping of the base mesh, it's very hard to avoid a nasty texture seam in the pubic area.
And a lot of texture artists will create male textures without matching genitals because there is no "official" version around.
So let's say artist "A" makes a texture set for Dawn's male counterpart.
Then artist "B" makes a male genital prop for Dawn's future mate.
He would need to "borrow" a few pixels from "A"'s texture so that his genital prop matches exactly to the body texture.
I do hate postwork, and I don't like to "mix" different "brands" of figures.
So this problem would also limit Dawn's use for me.
About the Educational thing? Sure

SubDed
V1 AKA Possetta is a good exsample of a mesh that was not modeled to be SubDed.
If you SubD V1 with just a plain solid shader on her ,no texture on her .
You can see what I'm talking about.
She has Tri's that pintch.
She has bunched up topolagy that crinkles when SubDed.
Here eye brows don't have topolagy for them to be SubDed.
She's a great game mesh just not maded for SubDed.
I don't do politics, religion or morals have no use for any of them.
Genitalia
If you need two meshes one with genitalia & one with out.
Then make two ,three ,or even four meshes what ever it takes.
Make the UV Map with the genitalia
Match the UVMap one with out
My philosophy has always been.
If you want to be successful you do whatever it takes ,No matter the cost.

Anyways...V6 is the most successful release in Daz history:) So you can throw the DUD speculation in the bin:) Glad its finally been made public so the speculation can end.
I got the e-mail. Frankly, I don't believe that "most successful" thing. What does it even mean? Most traffic? Most sales in dollars? Most downloads between 5pm and 7pm on a Wednesday?
More telling, to me, was that thread over at RDNA, linked from the Dawn thread. Alfaseed expressed unhappiness because V4 is such an old figure but that's still the one that sells the most stuff. They tried to support Genesis, but the sales just weren't there. They made a Genesis version of Alice, but decided it wasn't worth trying to sell it.
Most sales basically. And maybe they should try again. Timing could have just been bad for them. I have no sale issues, so it was probably a situational thing at the time.
A company cannot lie about facts like that. They can get into serious trouble. And it is true anyways. Daz went over the stats with some of us a few days ago because we were interested ourselves. But that is confidential information.
You don't have to believe it if you don't want to. That is strictly your choice. And DAZ will never give out numbers. That is like asking SM how many copies of Poser they have sold.
Again, I don't buy it. If by some miracle it is true, good for them! I just can't believe with most Poser users not buying Genesis products, V6 was the most successful release ever. Not to mention the DS users refusing to invest in another figure so soon.
Who knows.....maybe it is true. Maybe all of the paying DS users decided to buy her in the first few days and sales will slow until she's 50%-75% off in a month or two.

Do not underestimate the size of the Userbase. The app is given away for free, and so is the base figure. For all we know the users of many years are now the minority and most users now are a new generation of buyers who don't know about Poser/Daz history at all and do not actually care. All they see is free app, Genesis2 and V6. And again, never read into what is said in the forums as an indication of actual facts. Those who post are a very small minority compared to the actual user base size.

I think despite a lot of the forum noise, a lot of new buyers have shifted into DS because of the figure tech. That's why it's important for an application to have new and compelling content. SM may not have wanted Genesis, but it's very important for them to give their customers figures and content that use the full capablities of the program; and for the last 2 years they haven't done it.
Even in some of the forum posts and complaints about splitting figures, I've seen users that said it was too soon for a new figure end up buying V6... and liking it. There's still a place for the 1st gen (for its versatility), but V6's sales are actually showing that people rather have the specialized female shape than a more versatile one.
Quote - You don't have to believe it if you don't want to.
I don't believe it. But it's not personal. I never believe crap like this coming from the company itself.
I remember way back when Star Trek: Voyager was still in production. It was struggling in the ratings, so they introduced Jeri Ryan in a skintight catsuit. A couple of years later, Paramount took out an ad in Hollywood Reporter announcing that Seven of Nine had saved Star Trek: Voyager. And people reading the ad assumed that the show's ratings had gone up after Seven joined the cast.
I actually checked. Nope. Ratings actually went down after Seven joined the cast. Even among young males.
Not her fault. Just a continuation of the steady decline. But Paramount wasn't lying. They didn't say the ratings had gone up. They just said she "saved" the show.
Shenanigans, I tell you. It's all shenanigans.

Nice pic, bur this is a poser user forum, it is near usrless for poser users.
As for user base... dream on. Some of us have been on both ends, and made an informed choice based on sales numbers.

The best part is, that unlike Genesis, it will work NATIVELY in Poser. Genesis could have been great, i loved it at te begining, but cutting Poser users out was a big blunder on DAZ's part.
What seems to escape daz and some genesis enthusiasts is that working with it in Poser is royal PITA. If someone wants to go through tne trouble of switching software and learning a whole new system, there are far more fruitful options then DS.
When V4 came out, you didnt have to jump forums and argue with people trying to convince them to switch. Everyone and their brother was using it like crazy, across entire poserdom, and DAZ didnt have to close ranks to rescue its viability as a product. Genesis never even came close.
I used to be vey enthusiastic about Genesis technology, till after release I saw how it split the market and didnt take off like V4. Maybe you havent been around at during V4 release and lightning fast rise to know what its like when a figure is truly succesful.

Quote - They posted a new image of Dawn at their Facebook page and in the Freestuff thread. It's a Poser render by Sarsa.
It's Dawn out of the box. (Well, with her eyelashes dialed super-long.) The skin texture comes with her, and is a merchant resource. I assume the bikini and the hair are also the ones that come free with the base figure. So, no painted on bikini...or if there is one, it's removable.
It's kind of funny. A lot of people who didn't want to have anything to do with DAZ Studio are now interested in learning it...so they can support Dawn's DS incarnation as well her Poser version. (Though there is no requirement that people do this - if you want to support just one or the other, that's fine.)
