Subject: Is there an standard way to create vertical stripes down the leg of a costume?

I wanted vertical stripes down one leg of a pair of medieval tights and ended up drawing them by hand, in Zbrush, using my wacom's "precision mode" and a square alpha. It still required some corrections in PhotoShop due to irregular edges. Is there a better way to do this sort of thing? I was hoping Zbrush had spline-driven paint paths, but I wasn't able to find anything like this. Can Poser do this with procedurals and bake out a texture map?

If you hit L so that you activate the Lazy Mouse feature in ZBrush you can get a nice clean line. Just make sure you extend the Lazy Mouse Radius (found in the Stroke menu). I usually use the Standard brush with a setting of 45 on the lazy mouse Radius and with Alpha 48 on when doing detail stripes like what you're speaking of but the radius and alpha should be chosen on a case by case basis. Still, lazy mouse is probably what you're looking for.

Another option would be to map the object according to the polygons. Provided, of course, that the polygons flows in a "stripey" way in the first place. But that's how I cwould do it :) Then again, I don't have Zbrush :) - but I've made stripes on more than one occasion using Poser's Grouping Tool and some different Material Zones :)

I've made stripes on more than one occasion using Poser's Grouping Tool and some different Material Zones :)

*That takes skill, I would think. Myy topology isn't suited for that approach.

I'm not sure if I should redo the stripes or not. Here's an image of what I've been working on (hat and defunct side cape excluded.)

It takes patience more than skill L The Grouping Tool is rather primitive in its approach to things. But it's better than nothing if you don't have a modeling app :)

This example here is made in Hexagon and modeled to be textured like this, but the base idea is the same. this is pure material zones (rendered" in Hexagon)

But it does highlight the overall importance of topology, too :)

Try to make your clothes in Marvelous designer. UV's are perfectly flat and surface deforms as real cloth would deform. Consequently you can use a procedural shader like from the 'loom' of BB's mathmatic.

My Calf Pants for Antonia use a more simple procedural shader with a striped effect.

Chances are that style of hose is either knit or a bias cut fabric (this is how you get non knits to stretch at all, and its mentioned in various tailoring books of the period).  If its knit, then you will get the same distortion you always get when a knit fabric is stretched over a human. So a certain amount of wobblyness is realstic and expected.

If the fabrics is bias cut .. then your stripes are either woven and will end up going diagonally with the bias cut grain, or it has been printed onto the fabric after cutting.

In general when trying to draw straight lines on mesh I follow the mesh topo lines in pshop and then jump back and forth to the model to check how it lays.

Even in real costuming its fairly difficult to get straight lines onto a human without eitehr distortions or weird edges at a seam
