Can you describe exactly how you are trying to do this, step per step. That will make it easier to spot any bad move that you are making and help you on a detailed level. A good idea might also be to load a texture automatically with the use of a MAT file and see if that also creates a problem. You should be able to find something somewhere in the free stuff section that uses a MAT file for texture setting. If you load the MAT file and the texture renders OK, you can look at the texture settings and see if that differs from what you are trying to do manually with other combinations of model/texture.

hey..i sympathize with you..i also am a newbie to poser4..just playing around with it the past few days but its on my mind constantly trying to figure out what i'm doing wrong..i am so lost with it ..hehe..i also am having problems with textures loading and even knowing what it is that poser does or does not do..like, i thought i could take a template for clothing and paint it in PSP..then save as tiff file..then bring it back into poser and have the colors and so forth look just like what i painted..well..i'm finding out i can use the texture off what i painted..but not the color..and the texture looks weird and bad and nothing like what i painted even..i'm so lost..like i said i sympathize with you cuz i can't do a thing with mine that looks even remotely similar to what i see others doing..i'll stick with it but i do wish that the book was a bit more complete about certain things..

May I suggest looking at the tutorials at this site? There are some really great tut's here, by some very talented, generous people who spent lots of time to help us out. We've all been where you are now and most of us are still learning...just keep practicing and soon you'll be as addicted as the rest of us! :-)

My idea of rebooting is kicking somebody in the butt twice!

I started several years ago with Poser 1 (bald little plastic people) and I'm still learning new things! As Kelderek suggests, look through Freestuff (link at top of page) for a couple basic textures, see if you can apply them properly, then take a look at them in Photoshop or PSP to see how they works. Then experiment by making changes - it's trivial to use Hue-Saturation controls to change a texture. Beware that very high-resolution textures may tax your system too much, especially if you are using multiple high polygon count figures, hair and clothes. Start simple, don't worry about being able to do everything at first, and have fun.

Here are a couple of things I remember from my newbie days (not that long ago) might help: In the Render>Materials dialog, there is a small checkbox for "Texture changes apply to entire figure" - If this is not checked, you must apply textures to each Material on the figure individually (using the drop-down list). If you go back to the dialog later to make some revision, be sure of the state of that checkbox, or you might inadvertently apply a transmap or something else to an area you did not intend. You can also remove maps (accidentally sometimes) if you set the map to [none] when you think you are just affecting a single material. Also remember that if you are looking for the mapping to show up in the preview (un-rendered) window, you may not see much of a change until you do the final render.

The thread just three down from here has some good pointers for you (linked here). One of the more important is that you should set your objects to white so that your textures show up. I would also add, don't paint on your original tempates, make copies and use them, or you will end up having to do a re-installation. If you are using Poser 3 or an early Poser 4 you will need to go to Curious Labs web site and download and install the updates for your version. I drove myself nuts trying to get textures to take in P3 until I updated the program. Then presto! It all worked fine. jon
