Here are a couple of things I remember from my newbie days (not that long ago) might help: In the Render>Materials dialog, there is a small checkbox for "Texture changes apply to entire figure" - If this is not checked, you must apply textures to each Material on the figure individually (using the drop-down list). If you go back to the dialog later to make some revision, be sure of the state of that checkbox, or you might inadvertently apply a transmap or something else to an area you did not intend. You can also remove maps (accidentally sometimes) if you set the map to [none] when you think you are just affecting a single material. Also remember that if you are looking for the mapping to show up in the preview (un-rendered) window, you may not see much of a change until you do the final render.
