Thanks for your help. I have opened (& since closed) an incident at SmithMicro regarding the render artifacts on the hair. I've posted images to them showing the artifact that appears when I subdivided the hair to a level of 1 using Figure > Skinning Method > Poser Unimesh (preview 0 render 1). This almighty artifact appears to the right of V4's nose. I'm also getting artifacts on the skin which appear during the SSS pass of the render. I see on a thread on another site that these can occur when you're using scatter, idl, sss and smoothing. I'm using all of these. Apparently the solution for the skin artifacts is to move the camera angle slightly. I really like my camera angle right now, but I'm desperate so I'll try anything. I'll change the camera angle and see if that works.
Thanks for your instructions re going from SR2 to SR1. I'll try that this afternoon.
