Yes, the visibility in scene is supposed to be respected. There is a bug that is preventing that to work as expected but it will be fixed soon.

when the generic visibility is OFF the object will not show in Octane, but when it's ON and Camera visibility is OFF, it does show in Octane

This is IMHO user-unfriendly and sort of confusing at least. Hence my request:
to Paul: please also hide objects for Octane when their Camera visibility is OFF
to Paolo: please also hide objects for Reality when their general visibility is OFF
On top of that, to Smith Micro: please add a feature to re-hide objects which were hidden before I used the Figure > Show All menu option. So I can unhide bodyparts before I run a massive Cloth sim, and re-hide them again for rendering, preventing poke-through (and thanks to the above: render without poke-through in al three renderers of choise).
In the meantime: be aware of hidden objects showing up, or visible ones hiding.
I am not so sure if hiding viisibility in camera in Octane (or Lux) is a good idea. In Poser it means that reflections are still performed of the figure or object. Hiding them in Octane will not do the reflection. Since visible Off and Visible in Camera Off would then be the exact same thing, I would prefer to have it visible in Octane - In Octane I can often play with NearClipDepth to hide a figure or prop in front of the camera
Of course there are always exceptions, and more advanced users should be made able to manage them. Like wim's example. Or just my opposite example: I use helper objects for say eye-targets. Visible in preview, invisible in camera, and hence invisible in Firefly but they do show up in Octane unless I switch them all off manually. And then I have to switch visibility on for adjustment. Cumbersome. I find myself fiddling with null-materials and things like that.
I'm sure Paul and Paolo will find ways to support both points of view as long as they are aware.
In the meantime, my main point is that all ways of working are logical by themselves, but non-advanced users should not have to face three different logics from the standard way of working. And they should not have to sort out things like this all themselves, in my opinion. That's why I posted.

Run into this recently.
Hid a table from camera in Poser so that I could place the camera without it being obstructed by the table but still wanted the table rendered in an opposite mirror.
Worked great.
Not sure if the same technique could be used via Reality because of the unbiased nature of Lux...?
The various 'hide' options in Poser at first might seem confusing but are there for their own respective purposes.
I'm sure Paul and Paolo will find ways to support both points of view as long as they are aware.

Uncheck "visible in camera" and "visible in raytracing" for rendering. That way, as long as the bodypart is completely hidden by clothes, you don't have to worry about it showing up.
It also makes it easier to pose because you can select the bodypart easily instead of having to go through a menu, as you do when it's completely invisible.
@keith: my point is: this drill does not work when rendering with Octane, as this does not react on "visible in camera" but only on the generic "visible" instead.
