Subject: Best Practices in Full Body Morphs - Your Opinions?

Meshbox ( ) posted Mon, 30 September 2013 at 12:42 PM · edited Tue, 26 November 2024 at 6:26 AM

Hello all,

We are building our first batch of DungeonFolks characters and Id like to get your feedback on your expectations of how FBMs are applied. Let me give you some background.

There is a free base character - "Chunk".

There is a "race" add-on character - Halfling.

In the race character, there is a FBM for a personality "Roy the Halfling".

So you load up the Halfling character, select the Body and you see...?

Halfling 1.0

Roy 0.0

To see Roy in all his pudgy glory, would you expect:

Example 1:

Halfling 1.0

Roy 1.0

OR

Example 2:

Halfling 0.0

Roy 1.0

Its not clear to me if SM and Daz have formalized how to do this or its all wild running crazy naked in the streets chaos time.

Has this been formalized? What do you expect?

Best regards,

chikako

A stand alone FBM with an understandable name, and a dial from 0 to 1.

I made a ton of those for my own figures.

All have their personal dial from 0 to 1.

If you need one to get to the other, you are making things complicated.

Like most V4 things. You need XXX and you need YYYY to be able to use this ZZZ.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, when Newyear comes before Christmas. LOL.

When I see this?  Its time to turn the page.

When it comes to FBM's it's still the wild wild west. Daz tends to release morph packs that require other morph packs and we tend to (if we release morph packs at all) require only the base figure.  Other content providers may supply character morphs that aren't FBM's but just facial morphs that require other morph products so yeah, use your best judgement. How would YOU like it to be?

Personal opinion follows and is not meant to reflect that of my employer:

Financially, it makes sense to release them separately but you run the risk of making your users feel like they're being nickle and dimed to use an American idiom. I personally prefer for a character morph to not require other morphs be active. Mostly out of experience having made morphs but that's me and my personal opinion (which has nothing to do with my employer's thoughts on the matter).

Are these new figures, or based on existing figures. If they are new figures, I would recommend separating the base morph (halfling) and the character morph (roy) to allow flexibility by the user, but including poses which set both morphs to 1. Why?

I might want to have a halfling figure which is part Roy, part Ray (the halfling), a smidge of Jay the goblin, and some additional dial spinning. If you include the halfling morphs in Roy and Ray, you could end up with something with the halfling base morph dialed past one, which tends to end up being really aweful. (Try setting limits off with A4, and dialing her up to 2 for an example.)

I might also want to mix packages, such as goblin and halfling (making a kobold perhaps).

Also, if Roy includes existing morphs for Chunk, (for example, pudgy dialed up to 0.7), you may want to have the Roy dial only address the newly added unique morphs. That way we can have a skinny Roy, and it makes clothes fitting much easier.

Thank you all for you help with this. It is sounding like having separate Roy 0-1 and Halfling 0-1 is the way to go.

Just to give a little background...we previously released our character as Roy the Halfling. However we wanted to make more flexible halfling character, so we rebuilt the character. But, we want our customers to have the option to use Roy as a specific halfling. This is a part of our DungeonFolks initiative. If you'd like to keep up with it, we have a dedicated page on FB and also a Twitter account set up.

Best regards,

As long as we're asking, what's the best way to distribute a morph?

Eother fullbody or partial/ O'm thinking of trying my hand at that next for Roxie and if i hit on a really good morph, I'd like to distribute it.
