The 3DS format was originally in a 3D application by the same name.  

As for life in the slow lane, the increased horse power in computers makes the older generations of Mike & Victoria more attractive in group scenes.  In addition, I use Predaton's LowRes and the EPIC series of military and medieval figures to field whole units of up to a hundred characters.  

One M4 or V4 fully clothed can use up a lot of space, so lower resolution figures to "flesh out" the rest of the scene is useful.
