There really isn't a good answer to a lot of this.
I have programs installed that have not been updated in years, but they still work.
As long as it works, people will use it. That is all that really matters. If you have a large investment in it, there is nothing stopping someone from keeping a machine up with the op system required to run it.
I have programs with hardware investments, and there are not dirvers for them in the newer op systems. No need to update all of it if it still works.
As far as characters go. I was playing around with Posette the other day just to see what I could come up with. And she still works fine, actually better now that you can SubD, WM, SSS, etc.
What makes a character popular? Well that depends on how you look at it. Lots of people say that V4 is really popular, yet I rarely use her at all. The most I ever used her was when I was on the V4~WM team. After that I stopped using her for the most part. People say that Genesis is really popular, but not with me. Yes, I have Studio installed.
What characters do I use? Lots of them, including many I made myself.
It is ironic that many Poser users wanted new characters and now that they got a bunch of them, they don't (insert whatever here).
Is Poser going anywhere? I sort of doubt it. It has stood up to the test of time.
What will go are the users that are never satisfied with (insert whatever here).
Even if no new characters came out, most of us have more in our Runtimes than we have ever used. Each generation of Poser makes it easier to use all of it, and yet people want a new (insert whatever here), to just sit in the runtime because it doesn't (insert whatever here).
(Insert whatever here) O_o
