Last time I did a 360 degree rotating view of a character I ended up animating the pose camera because I wasn't getting the expected behavior trying to rotate the body. Rotating the hip would work, but if it has any rots applied to it your fly around will look kooky. The camera parameters are all animatable so you can do whatever zooms you want. Can't comment on the Batman thing because I've never played it.
