It has been around for a while but sadly not used very often.  It appears not many animation fans.  Single frame images are more popular and easier for most I guess.  It is a shame as seeing a static figure or toon come alive is a neat experience.  Animation is more work than still images but worth it.

 

Personally, like you, I prefer animation most of the time with an occasional still image.
