I'll jump in with a self-shot of myself (not visible because I kept moving) painting my daughter's initials with a flashlight aimed towards the camera. Thanks for looking!

Oooohh!  That's a true challenge for me.  I think I've done this ... oh ... maybe twice in my life.  I've made a note to remind myself to try it.  Excellent challenge, Clive!

Hi Photo people!
First I would like to express my compliments to Clive.
Your introduction of this theme is designed so incredibly creative.
Applause.

I'm going to figure out how to do this.
And I really admire the entries of Wayne, 3DGuy and Helle.
Bravo!
p.s. @ Helle, I first thought yours was a collage. :)

cfulton ( ) posted Mon, 02 December 2013 at 1:47 PM

Thank you, Mies!

Hopefully this will be a good one with all of the festive lights at this time of the year!

Well done, Helle!

Great idea to include the exposure time, 3DGuy!

Oh yeah, all the party lights, indeed that's very applicable.
Now I will be forced to start reading the instructions of my camera ;-)

Nice idea Clive.  I will have to sse if I can get out and shoot something.  And thanks for using one of my shots in the example banner :)

auntietk ( ) posted Mon, 16 December 2013 at 7:32 PM

I'm sure enjoying all these photographs!  Very inspiring.

I tried some slow shutter water shots today, but haven't looked at 'em yet.  If you don't see anything from me, it's because they're crap!  LOL!  I'm hoping at least one of them turned out ... I've not done that sort of thing before.  We also have a date with Lucinda (myrrhluz) for a Friday night tripod shoot at San Antonio's river walk.  I have hopes of getting something there, as well.  :)

I think this is one I will enjoy Tara.  I love night shooting,  And honey is going to try tonight for some Christmas light shots.  I will have to pray it stops raining for her.

I am sure you have some good water shots sweetie :)   And I hope the shoot goes well for you.  IF you want some tips about shutter speeds etc, you know where I am

auntietk ( ) posted Mon, 16 December 2013 at 8:34 PM

I'd love some tips on night shooting, Ronnie!  That would be outstanding.  Thanks!  :)

Adobe_One_Kenobi ( ) posted Mon, 16 December 2013 at 8:46 PM

Well the first thing I would suggest is the lowest ISO you have.  Secondly a cable release is an absolute must,  if using a low iso, because shutter speeds will be slow.  I know the more modern cameras have high usable iso's but the low iso/shutter speeds will give a more ethereal water and atmosphere too.  If you'd like star lights on the point sources of light, ie street lamps etc.  Choose a smallish aperture.

I like to shoot ISO 50 f/22.  gives a long shutter time on the "Bulb" setting of the camera.  And also helps to create better star-bursts on lights.   I usually start at 15 seconds, and if it looks too dark, start going a bit longer.   If you can't get down to 50 then iso 100 and obviously double the shutter time.  I have had on occasions a whole minute :)  Also shooting in RAW helps, so you can rescue and blown highlights in raw post.  It's all suck it and see really sweetie.  The rule book will tell you f/11 and it's corresponding shutter speed via aperture priority.  But I do prefer the bulb setting method.  Up to you really.

Adobe_One_Kenobi ( ) posted Mon, 16 December 2013 at 9:17 PM

I should have said half the shutter time for 100 ISO.  It's late and I had a senior moment :)

auntietk ( ) posted Mon, 16 December 2013 at 9:27 PM

Thank you, hon!  I'll print this out and take it with me.  :)  I read your note to Bill, and he's excited to try the bulb setting as well.  His mom used to use it for fireworks (pre-digital of course) and he really liked the results she got.  (Must have been pretty impressive, because that would have been in the early 1950s, and it's stuck with him all this time!  LOL!)

Good that it has stuck.  Knowledge gleaned is knowledge saved as my old Nan used to say.

Very nice..these are fun and gently pleasing, like the still of the night or fun as the festive moments.  My Christmas lights photos are too shot of an exposure.

Good jobs, folks...Thomas
