If the computer is hanging and won't respond to the keyboard it suggests a low level problem like display driver or system board/disk area rather than a Poser issue. As the background renders are ok it doesn't sound like a heat/power problem so prehaps the graphics card ? - first thought is OpenGL, if you use it for preview and haven't tried SreeD mode it might be worth a quick go.
