Disagree, mate.  You only need one good program to get started.  I agree you don't need to spend any money for it.  I'd say the only thing you need a modeller with UV ability.  Voxel sculpting isn't a necessity to learn modelling, especially when you are only interested in making simple things, and shouldn't be on your radar till later.
