I think I got the hex geometry down perfect. Here are some samples, with various parameters modulated top to bottom so it's kind of a catalog.

This was an excellent brain teaser. Now - the next puzzle is how to allow the tiles to be different colors.

 

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)
