Subject: How do I remove Add-ons?

Cage ( ) posted Mon, 17 February 2014 at 1:08 PM · edited Fri, 29 November 2024 at 6:59 AM

I loaded a couple of Add-ons in Poser Pro 2012.  I have since moved on to PPro2014, where I have not installed the Add-ons.  I did, however, port my preferredState.pz3 from Pro12 to Pro14, and that has caused Pro14 to think it has my old Pro12 Add-ons installed.  The listings are carried around from pz3 to pz3, as I save scenes.  I deleted the Add-ons lines from the Pro14 preferredState.pz3, but the program still remembers them.  It's almost like having a computer virus.

So, I have a sort of general user knowledge question, relating to Poser Add-ons.  Once we install them, how the heck do we get rid of them?  😕  Last time I checked, the formal documentation was... call it "lacking"... in areas like this.

Does deleting from runtime:python:addons not remove after restart?

I don't have anything loaded for Pro14, in that location.  Only the default Python Shell, which I like lots.   I don't want to uninstall from Pro12, which might be necessary to accomplish what you suggest.  Poser presumably has (it certainly should have) a built-in way to remove or block an Add-on for a specific version of Poser.

Mind you, they're just kind of passively hanging around and not causing active trouble, these old version Add-ons.  I don't like them adding extra junk lines at the bottom of every .pz3 file I save out of Pro14, though.  I'm happy enough having the thing in Pro12, but now it follows me around and I don't want it to do that.  I want user control of my Add-on experience.  There should be a way to do this, and we users should know how to do it.  Otherwise Poser Add-ons seem like a potential problem.  Imagine a malicious Add-on, from some disgruntled Poser user, or a weaponized Add-on which acts as a Poser-driven computer virus.  We need to know how to disable or remove these things.  If we don't have that capability, then the Poser Team left out some very important features and functions when devising the Add-ons system.

Interesting.  I just deleted an addon from my PP2014 and restarted and it found the one in pp2012.   I then unlinked the PP2012 runtime and restarted and it came up without the deleted addon.

It apparently searches all linked runtimes to find the addons during startup.

This is exactly what it does.

Could that not cause a conflict?  If I had two different versions of addon xyz, which would it use?

Those values are not used unless the addon is installed. If you want to remove them you must edit the pz3 file with a text edit, do not use a word processor, while Poser is not running. That is fundamental. If you have Poser running then the values have been loaded in memory.

Close Poser, edit the file and you'll be all set.

Hope this helps.

I use the Poser File Editor to strip the references from the preferredState.pz3, as well as the .pz3 files I intend to use which had the Add-on references embedded.  I do this while Poser is closed.  I check and re-check the preferredState.pz3, finding that the Add-on listing at the bottom of the file is, indeed, gone.  Yet when I re-open Poser... there the Add-on is, still in the menu.  When I click on the menu listing, it still opens.  No change, essentially.  The persistence of the menu listing, which is presumably what's causing the Add-on to keep being added to every single .pz3 I save, seems completely de-linked from the preferredState.pz3 or any other .pz3 file.  Poser is remembering it somehow.  I can't seem to get rid of the thing, and I don't want to uninstall it from the previous version.

Seems like Poser's trying to do my thinking for me, but, in typical Poser fashion, the thinking it imposes is a bit muddled and kludgy, unwieldy and inflexible.  If one can use those descriptors to describe thought.  Suspect I've muddled a metaphor, there.
