Subject: Carrara 8.5 sssllllooowwwing down

manleystanley ( ) posted Sat, 12 April 2014 at 9:14 AM · edited Fri, 29 November 2024 at 12:43 AM

I don't know what is up with C8.5 so I have no clue how to fix it. It just seems the more I use it the more slugish it gets. As in scenes I have that are a simple single clothed character that used to open in seconds, now takes mintues. Working in any of the rooms has turned in to a lag fest no matter how small the scene. Working with the texture room it takes as long for the first texture on a single figure to load as it does the 30th of a big scene.

I don't know what is up but the way it looks eventually I wont be able to use C8.5 at all because it will be lagging to badly to do anything.

I've cleared out the DAZTMP folder so that isn't the issue. I tried a fix reinstall but it didn't make a difference, I may have to go with a fresh, clean reinstall.

Anyone else having this issue or know what to do about it?

I find it super slow as well anytime I'm using a character in a scene - the load and save times are crazy long and I have a super fast ssd.  I hardly use carrara anymore because of it. I don't know if saving a scene uncompressed would help, but I doubt it. If I figure anything out I'll post it here :)

I can't solve your problem, but I'm wondering if Carrara is somehow holding on to geometry, textures or other info from previous scenes.

ldgilman ( ) posted Sat, 12 April 2014 at 3:51 PM

This approach has worked on most of our PC's that are severly short on RAM. It is just a suggestion, you may have already tried the below items. The problem sounds an awful lot like "Disk Thrashing". Which is basicly that there is not enought RAM to accomidate all the stuff that is going on so the system is constantly writting to the hard drive.. Also check that the performance is set to "Adjust for Best Perforamnce" and not "Adjust for Best Appearance" or "Let Windows Choose...".

saving compressed will slow things down, not using 8.5 so can't help sorry, I have it but refuse to be a beta tester ;)

Hey, Andrew!! You're alive...and not a beta tester. :)

Heh, H eh heh :)

I are unbeckcredably overworked and underpaid :) No just working for a painting show, trying to keep up my professional credentials on top with continuing ed, and working on another book and trying to keep my agent happy by feeding things at a constant rate - so no time for play. I'm also trying to get my head around Corel Painter x3 to  give my cg a hand crafted look. Very interesting, no joy yet but definitely has promise. Worth the price of entry I think, though I've never been willing to spend the money!

hope you are well :)

Awesome - saving uncompressed is much less torturous - glad I have that 4TB external drive :)

headwax. ( ) posted Sat, 12 April 2014 at 9:25 PM

oh i got two times 2 tb on board and one is full ...... took at least three weeks tho ;)

Wish I was half as busy as you. Would keep me out of loads of trouble. :)

I just found a paint program called Krita that I've been having fun with. It's free and easy. I'm loving the brushes. Also, just got 3dCoat. That is one awesome piece of software.

Doing well over here on this side of the globe. Keep busy. It'll keep you off the street. Heh, heh.

headwax. ( ) posted Sat, 12 April 2014 at 10:40 PM

thanks for the heads up on Krita! looks good, dowloading now! BTW do you render out a fragment coverage pass ? really handy as gives you object outlines - great for post work isolation of different things in your scene.

manleystanley ( ) posted Sat, 12 April 2014 at 11:42 PM

Check your render settings when saving. carrara will save a thumb at what settings you are using; see where it took an hour and a half to save a simple scene set for a hirez render with HDRI and SSS hair lol

Figured out my issue. Carrara does not drop the scene when you close the scene, open and close 3 or four scenes and carrara is cloging up your ram with every one of them.

Note to self: close carrara between scenes.

You're welcome.

'Fragment coverage pass'. I know my brain case is getting old, bu that one doesn't sound familiar. So, what's a fragment coverage pass? It sounds pretty handy.

That's what it was sounding like to me. I wonder if it works the same for 8.1? I'll have to load and close a bunch of scenes and see what happens. :)

headwax. ( ) posted Mon, 14 April 2014 at 7:55 AM

Oh you know the render passes you can choose from? In the render room, it's just one of those - save it as a different file and if you choose the file name before hand it saves a loat of wriggling around when the render is done. - assuming you have made a few render pass thIngush like shadow depth etc. cheers. , sorry Tupi g on an iPad is like typing with your big toe

booksbydavid ( ) posted Mon, 14 April 2014 at 10:35 AM

Been awhile since I've rendered in passes in Carrara. I've been using a filter program from Onone software called Perfect Effects. I've been having too much fun combining and adjusting filters and effects. It almost makes rendering passes a thing of the past.

Btw, you don't type so bad with your big toe. Very talented fellow you are. :)

My hard drive is full of images like that. Heh, heh.

headwax. ( ) posted Tue, 15 April 2014 at 6:59 PM

actually the oloneo photo engine is very good even with single images , it helps bruing back the detail in highlights, pretty expensive for that alone but I think I bought it on special , it sort of gives images a 'twang' - unless you overuse it - just means you can blow out your highlights accidentally in a render and still recover them without having to render again

booksbydavid ( ) posted Tue, 15 April 2014 at 11:05 PM

Heh, heh. I'd not heard of Oloneo before. At first, I thought it was your big toe talking.

I looked it up. Not a bad looking bit of software. It is a bit expensive, but those examples look pretty nice.

What just happened?

oh there is a parralell universererserea

oloneo is great for fine tuning, it's meant for taking your three bracketed image files  and taking the best part of each and combining , but that means using a tripod, so it's a bit restricted = the auto align is pretty ordinary, also there seems to be a sameness about hdr images that can pretty cliched after a while.

there's also the relight part of it which will identify different light sources in your pic and allow you to specify how much light each puts out -s o relevant for interior photos, but irrelvant for my work at the moment.

booksbydavid ( ) posted Wed, 16 April 2014 at 10:28 AM

I got the Onone Perfect Effects in what they call the Perfect Suite. It comes with an array of tools for image production. Sort of a swiss army knife for image correction and manipulation.

This whole 3d thing has become like an addiction. I've gone from compulsively buying content I might never use to buying software I might never use just because it's for my art (that's what I keep telling myself anyway). It's a never ending spiral. What's next? Writing my own plugins for Poser/Carrara? Buying a software company?

I need an intervention. Help!

manleystanley ( ) posted Wed, 16 April 2014 at 11:26 AM

{being a smart arse}

Well it must be nice.

No, I'm so used to using what apps I have I don't even think of "specialty" app. The closest I would have would be Genetica, and if I hadn't been in on that sence before the release I certainly couldn't afford it now. And I use it a lot. I can not only make all the textures I need as well as all the effects maps for them, I can also easily mod textures; or fix bump maps.

I got the 64bit version of Photofilter, but most of the tutrials are in french. It has a lot of options for a freebie and is easier to use then gimp. It's like photoshop, but more generic. I've got PSPX{paint shop pro 10} but it wont install to W8.1. I got it free while they were doing the very limited time free verion of it. I've never updated it so that could be why I can't install it.

Had to look up PE8 to see what it was, turned out there is a free{with regestration} version to download. Hey, I'll check it out at that price lol http://www.ononesoftware.com/products/effects8free/ I don't see any restrictions on it, but there must be.

booksbydavid ( ) posted Wed, 16 April 2014 at 11:41 AM

Yeah, forgot about the free version of Perfect Effects. That's how I found out about it. Hope you have fun playing with it. I don't remember any restrictions in use. The only downside (as I recall) is that the number of effects is limited.

I only ever bought the whole suite because they had an insane sale last year. I got the standard version because the pro version was really more aimed at photographers and was not worth the extra money to me.

Just about anything I have I got because of a sale of one sort or another. My days at DAZ conditioned me to always wait for a sale because there will always be one. :)

lucky i already had em :)

booksbydavid ( ) posted Thu, 17 April 2014 at 11:55 AM

Now, I need to make some underwater renders.

Just as an aside, I recently felt the need for a fluid sim in one of my renders. Of course, Carrara doesn't do that. I decided to have a go in Blender. The fluid sim in Blender (after a tutorial or two) turned out to be incredibly simple. I created the sim in Blender and exported it to Carrara for mats and rendering. Turned out pretty good. Now I can add Ron's waterline brushes to the mix. I need to do another fluid sim. :)
