"That grey" map you are talking about is a bump Map.
As you are working with an old hair, the best solution is to DELETE it.
(Old shool hairs came with bump maps, and some with specular maps that where just greyscale maps of the diffuse map) => Delete it, or delete both of them if you see 2 greyscale maps.
Use the setup I showed in my first screengrab above. (Click on the picture to enlarge it)
The 3D effect comes from the connection between the Diffuse Texute and the Displacement set at 0.1 to 0.3.
For hair you only need 2 maps :
The Diffuse_color (Diffuse Texture) map loaded at GC 2.2, and the Transparancy map loaded at GC 1.000.
