I'm sure this isn't personal to you, Rorr. 

Moderator can go through a thread that's gotten out of hand and read the thread, and pick and choose which posts to keep and which to delete. If he does that, he'll have 20 PM's from people wanting to know why THEIR post was deleted. It will take him all night.

Or moderator can lock the thread, leaving the evidence behind for anyone who wants to see why it was locked. And he'll still have some of the evening left for... his life.

Moderation could be crowd-sourced, but I'm sure there are good reasons that almost no forums do it.

Or mod could be paid a real full-time wage -- but somehow, I don't think we have quite the traffic in the forums to justify that.
