Have you tried deleting your preferences? In 5.5, they're in this folder: Program FilesAdobePhotoshop 5.5Adobe Photoshop 5.5 Settings. The file is called Adobe 5.5 Prefs.psp. Deleting prefs is a common remedy for all kinds of mysterious problems. A new prefs file will be generated when you next open Photoshop.
