Blender F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 24 8:44 pm)
I know Blender can do hair and either as an actual mesh obj or with in the particle system here is a video tutorial describing 3 methods and work flows for creating hair with in Blender Different Methods For Making Hair As to which software is a better choice Blender, Max, Maya or any other Modeling software you will get a variety of answer on which is better for this or that. Blender has many great tools to do just about anything the big name software packages can do and it is Free. You will have to decide what works best for you with in your own personal workflow. I am sure more members will chime in with their opinion since we are fortunate to have a wide variety of experience within this forum so am very confident you will get more replies to your question soon.
Good Luck

the blender wiki is the manual and you can download the most current version from blendernation
its about 26Mb to 53Mb depending on what version you want
i have never downloaded it because i only work in 2.49b and the newer blenders are torture to me
the site has links to the downloadable version but again firefox is killing my ability to post the links
I got the lastest one and am adding it to my Google drive and will make it available for anyone who wants to grab a copy. I like having a hard copy on my PC for times when my Internet acts up during storms since I sort of live in the booneys. The version I got which seems to be last revised on Sept 8th 2014 pretty current I would say Will get the link up as soon as I have finished adding to my google drive

the biggest difference between blender and other programs is that blender is open source so it gets updates and add ons every day
blender can do everything that most of the paid for softwares can do with a few exceptions
i love blender as i have been using it since almost day 1 but there will always be some limitations in every software ever made
cgcookie and blendernation are good resources to learn from but they do not always address your particular situation, but most tutorials will work across platforms. meaning that most maya tuts are doable in blender
i would have to delve into the deepest levels of the newer blender to figure out how to reset the interface to the older style but i have been told that it can be done
Ok here is the link as promised blender_wiki_pdf_manual_EN_20140908.pdf
If anyone has a problem getting it let me know

Funny you should mention hair... I've had this long-standing obsession with the English Edwardian period. I have decided that since no one has made any 1895-style mesh hair for Poser (as opposed to particle hair, which I've soft-of had a play with in Blender, and which doesn't work properly in Poser yet anyway), I've decided to go ahead and make my own, using Lady LittleFox's modo-based tutorials as a guide.
I bought her hair tutorial set when they first came out and were on special and though they're for modo contain some really good advice for hair makers. Only thing is, they're a bit dear, full-price... I think you can get the set for $60 if you buy both, which is better than the $40 each full price, but still.
So, I'm at that threshold of "hmmm, where do I start?". The skull-cap is made... that bit was easy:
-> UV Sphere
-> spin it round so the poles are near the ears
-> slice half off, then add mirror modifier
-> in face mode (gotta love [CTRL] [TAB]!!) remove poles and other mesh you don't need
-> add shrink-wrap modifier, making the figure you're working with the Target
-> few little tweaks, including [W] (smooth) and mate, you're laffin' - easy-as!
But yeah, this next bit is gonna be interesting. Here's a sample of what I'd like to achieve: those Belle Epoque styles. Particularly, this one.
Monterey/Mint21.x/Win10 - Blender3.x - PP11.3(cm) - Musescore3.6.2

I think 3Dmax for hair, because of this plugin...
It is said on CGTalk and others as best for hair by some studios. I would like Blender to get something much like this.
gonna say blender can do that !! but its not easy (of course I dunno how hard it is in that plugin lol )
even if the best software around the skills of the artist have to be factored in !!!
some of the work you can see in BA would have most of us selling a kidney for a lesson (or three)
I got into this hobby (after yrs on autocad an stuff making real things) 'cos I wanted to be an artist lol (asif) know now I'm a fairly good "technician" I can use the software to make most of what I want BUT I am NOT an artist
on my monitoring and checking the galleries I saw someone who did what I thought was a fine job making Blender hair but I think your right it does great Blender hair in Blender maybe hopefully Smithmicro will start to realize that Blender can be used as a great workflow tool with Poser and find some ways to allow for better intergration.

What would also be acceptable is if Blender had some way to make a mesh of the particle hair. I'm not unlike Robynsveil. I honest do think that Blender renders much better than Poser. But I don't really like having to switch between programs to get something done. That's one of the reasons I wouldn't even touch Genesis when it first came out. I don't have a problem with Genesis as much as I have a problem with having to use Studio.
The Maya and 3dsmax hair I show allow for user to out put hair as geometry mesh, for use in other software. This is not a possible action in our Blender, as I know. I do not like the particle solution for hair as we show now, because of many reasons. Compatible only for rendering in the Blender pipeline.
I think we are in need of a new hair system to be certain.
