When I started putting tomatoes in everything (which vastly improved my life, by the way) I sliced them in long strips. This works for a sandwich but doesn't work in soup or chili. The outer peel comes off and curls up. Then I tried slicing them Poser-style: a mixture of equal-sided tris and quads. This pattern "renders" much better in the pan. The piece remains whole.
