No matter what I do it just seems to be this "Matte" - I'm using LuxRender mind you.
First of all, make sure your material settings are not being overridden by one of the ACSEL shaders.
If you have the default ACSEL for Genesis installed, what you do in surface tab won't have any effect on render.
The shader for Echo uses a light purplish blue for the specular color, so that should be starting point for Lux material.
You should see tutorial on how Luxrender materials work with whatever exporter you are using.
Luxrender is a physically correct system, so lighting and color of surrounding objects influence as in real world.
To gain intuition of scene you must do many mistaken ones to see effect of changes.
I do this one, changing hair color and face morph but keeping most skin texture and shaders.
I think change can be called significant.
