Silo 2.3.1 released

I'm a few days late announcing it here, but we have released Silo 2.3.1 for Windows, both 32-bit and 64-bit versions, Mac OS X 10.9 64-bit, and Linux 64-bit. Here are the release notes:

  • Data directories have changed, so we can stop having a bad launch experience for those coming from Silo 2.2 and earlier. We now differentiate them by version, and they will be in "My DocumentsSilo2.3-x86..." for win 32-bit, "My DocumentsSilo2.3-x64..." for win 64-bit, "~/.silo/2.3-x64/..." for linux, and buried deep in app support on OS X in "com.nevercenter.silo2/2.3-x64/..."
  • The Windows versions are now large-address-aware, this is particularly helpful for 32-bit users when running on a 64-bit windows. Silo can now use 4 GB of RAM instead of just 2 GB.
  • Windows 64-bit native version. The 64-bit version can handle larger meshes due to availability of more than 4 GB of RAM, the same as the Mac OS X and Linux versions which are already 64-bit native starting in Silo 2.3.
  • The black-window issue on Linux has been fixed, which was caused by European numeric locales. Silo now forces a US/UTF-8 locale on launch. Some distros may still setup the locale incorrectly, so if you use a non-US locale and run into issues, please let us know at support@nevercenter.com what distribution / locale you are using.
  • A cut tool crash has been fixed. This was particularly easily triggered on Mac OS X and Windows, but could eventually happen to Linux users as well.
  • Alt/option key handling on OS X has been fixed. This fix was made available early in the Mac-only version 2.3.02 as well.
  • It is now possible to delete empty objects in the scene editor.
  • Exported OBJs should play much better with Substance Painter.
  • Context menu placement on OS X with multi-monitor setups should be fixed.
  • Retina display issues on OS X should be mostly fixed, although we don't have Retina-resolution icons yet.

Known Issues, Mac OS X:

  • There is a rare OS X crash immediately on launch; please send bug reports to support@nevercenter.com if you encounter this.
  • Silo does not remember the texture assigned to the materials across sessions due to Apple sandboxing. To get textures to display, you must re-select the texture with the file selection dialog from the material dock during your Silo session.

Known Issues, All Platforms:

  • FACT files exported to EIAS don't work properly. As a workaround, try another export format if you need to interchange with EIAS.
  • Exporting to OBJ will not include UVs for subdivided surfaces unless you refine the control mesh first. As a workaround, you can refine meshes, export, and undo the refinement.

Update: the new data directory locations may require you to re-enter your registration info. Sorry about that little hassle.

Happy modeling!

I see there's finally some stability issues adressed here.  Doesn't fix all of them, but the 2.3 update was a joke, unless you use Linux.

I'm sure on Linux it's more stable, but most of the houses I'd be working with have windows or mac seats, with linux only as render slaves.  So modelling wouldn't be done on a linux seat.  There's no reason it can't be stable on Windows, because other packages are.

Has anyone tried the new version of Silo3D? For only $40.00 I'm tempted to give it a try...as I've been playing with the trial and watch Glen Southern's tutorials....

I tried the trial too.  What do you want to know?  Aside from some improved stability (it still crashed twice on me during a very basic extrusion modelling session) and bug fixes, not much has changed.  Still the same ol tools, which I've found very good 5 years ago, but extremely behind the poly modelling standard nowadays.  Check out how C4Dr15 and above creates bevels, and you'll see how things have changed since Silo.  Blender's modelling tools have far surpassed Silo now too.  Never thought I'd say that.

Did Silo ever come out with modifiers as part of its tools?  $40 sounds good at first, until you consider there is at least one other 3d modeling software out there which has way more tools, including a very powerful modifier system, for absolutely no cost.  I'm speaking of Blender, of course.  With Blender, once you get used to the keyboard shortcuts, you can literally model anything with just your mouse and keyboard, and never have to touch any buttons or menus on the screen.  Plus, you have tons of powerful modifiers, which make it so much easier to bend, twist, taper, or deform any polygon mesh much faster than doing it by hand.

If you really don't wanna learn Blender for whatever reason, there is also a nice little modeling software out there called Hexagon, which can do almost all the things that Silo can do, but for half the price.  I think I saw it at around $20 recently, and it seemed to have a few tools that Silo didn't have, like some modifiers, and I think it might support curves too.

I have Silo in my toolbox. It is under a lot of other tools that I use already. Hexagon 1.21's GUI is more my style than Silo's.

I know Blender is powerful and free but I just can't get my head around it's user interface... And yes I've tried, quite a few times. Really not interested in Blender. The cost of Hexagon was only $25 or so and well worth it. I did purchase Silo a few weeks ago and it's interface reminded me a bit of Wings3D.

I've heard good things about Nvil and I've played with the demo/trial but I did not like it's ui either....Too many exploding balloons and dialogue boxes....

I tried Blender about every major update it had.  Could not get past 10 minutes of use without uninstalling it. Not fun to use at all compared to everything else I've CG'd in.

I hear ya' Shawn, that is my experience as well and it's too bad as it's a very powerful app and gives the big boys like 3DMax, Maya, etc a run for their money....But the user interface must have been developed by someone having a bad LSD trip or something... I do computer networking admin for a living and I just do not want another headache when I'm in my downtime trying to enjoy what is a hobby to me...

I was somewhat productive in Hexagon after just playing around with it for a couple of weeks and of course the excellent tutorials on Hexagon at Geekatplay.com helped a lot as well... I love Geekatplay.... Vladimir, Aime & Gary are awesome....
