Subject: Looking for a good chimpanzee or decent monkey

Hi All!

Looking for a good Chimpanzee or other apes/monkeys for Poser. Besides the really nice monkey I got from the DAZ Store and their long in the tooth gorilla and the even older and ugly Chimpanzee which came out when poser 4 was started I have not been able to find any other modern better made apes.

Anyone know of any?

The only decent ones I've seen are for Genesis 2 Male, HD versions more appropriate for PP2014 64-bit.  They are actually primate creatures, not definitive apes by any sense but can be posed as such.

The only ones I know of are the Daz Gorilla, Daz Chimp and Silver Key 3D Monkey.

As Daffy34 said these are the best I've seen out there.  But be sure to look up textures for them.  That makes all the difference in the world for a model.

That would mean having to use the genesis figures and that demonic DSON importer. I work exclusively in Poser Pro 2014 now and the few attempts I have made to take advantage of the sales at DAZ and pick up some of the newer content to import into Poser have ALL led to refunds and a curse to never purchase DSON/Genesis or any of those items DAZ is selling w/o Poser direct content installers. It is frustrating when i see figures like the Minotaur 2 which is a beautiful figure and the best they have come up with. But it to falls into that DSON black hole. So I just chomp on the disappointment and move on like the fox who convinced himself the grapes were probably sour anyway when he couldn't reach them!  :)

But, thanks guys.

shante, the ones that Laurie and I mentioned are older ones, and NOT DYSON.  They are stand alone figures.  I've used them in commercial assignments, so they are decent figures.  You may want to look into them.

oh!?

Where? There was only the old chimp at daz from way back.

Not DSON I meant.  And if your search for each name, (i.e., chimp, gorilla, monkey) you will find them for between $9 and $14 each.  Yes, they are from "way back" but as I said, with a good texture they are still pretty decent.  I've used them commercially.

ok. I bought their chimp way back and by today's standards it is a bit long in the tooth by way of realism in shape and texturing sucks, expressions and posing also leave a lot to be desired. I will be stuck using it if absolutely necessary but prefer not having to.The post work I would wind up having to do is way more than I care to do. I was praying to find something better. Those chimps for genesis by Raw Art are brilliant but DAZ abandoning base Poser users who put that company on the map before there was a DAZ and still Zygote, really frustrates the hell out of me. Their products are some of the best around and in most cases really the only show in town so far but forcing longtime Poser users to either suck on their bad convoluted DSON tech bone or use old stuff, sucks. There is no way they can't tell their content creators to do both when they offer their new stuff in the store: Core Poser and Core Genesis/D/S should be the way to go and for my way of seeing marketing strategy, the best way of keeping long time Poser users M.O.N.E.Y. as well as promote their core D/S and Genesis lines.

Just my cranky frustrated thought on all this. Sorry, my thread my rant!  LOL

Where do you find better textures for the old Chimp? I have the Silverleaf monkey and it at least is lovely and their gorilla has had a good run and have a few good textures for it and renders well. But have not found anything for the chimp since I bought it in my previous life!

Let me see if I can find some textures for the old chimp.  I thought they had some at DAZ.

Carrie58 at ShareCG has some ... see what you think.  She has 3 different textures for the chimp.

I have Bonobo from content paradise, way better than the Daz Chimp... still a little dated looking though. The textures could use some work... Pretty nice mesh and good facial expressions however.

file_b3e3e393c77e35a4a3f3cbd1e429b5dc.jpI don't know about you but reworking the texture with a new normal map and Snarly's EZSkin 2 might make a convincing monkey.

I saw it but it isn't a chimpanzee. But I put some of the monkeys there in my wish list in case needed later. Thanks.

Thanks. Got the textures and redownloaded the old chimp from my order history at DAz and will try the new textures. Thanks.

Victoria 3 has an ape morph, but that makes her look more like one of the apes from the old Planet of the Apes movies (i.e., an ape head on a human body).

These are native Poser figures for me. No DSON importer script required.

If you want Genesis or Genesis 2 in Poser without using the DSON script, it's not difficult. Takes about 5 minutes. But you will need Netherworks' Creator's Toybox and Daz Studio to do it.

  1. Load Gorilla in Daz Studio. Make sure UV is set to Gorilla. It should be by default.

  2. Export the figure, choosing Poser CR2 as the save option.

  3. Save the CR2 into your Poser runtime of choice.

  4. Open Poser. Start Creator's Toybox. Follow the instructions from the Guide on how to convert DSON figures. Find the CR2 you exported and point the script to that using the Preset for DSON FIgures. If you are asked to move or copy the geometry, make a choice based on the Guide's recommendations. I choose to copy the obj to the runtime.

  5. Wait about a minute or two.

You now have a Poser native Genesis gorilla that will accept DSON imported poses, or regular Poser PZ2s. AFAIK, it does not need the DSON script to work. I DO know that it does not activate the DSON script when you load or manipulate it in any way, and there is no UI slow down.

To further optimize the figure,

**1. Copy the textures from the DS runtime to the Poser runtime where you have the CR2.

**2. Copy the MC6's  and pose PZ2s from the Poser Companion files to your runtime.

**3. Apply the "Close in" materials and run EZSkin2 on them. Apply Gorilla pose. Use child morph to make child gorilla. (I used Zev0's "Growing Up" morph).

  1. You will need to fix the eyelashes. Either make them completely transparent, or add some genesis lashes. They won't show up on a black gorilla anyway.

** I didn't actually do this. I didn't copy the textures or pose/mat files. I used the DSON script to apply the materials and the pose. But in theory you could just do as I suggested.

Finally, you can change the skinning method of the figure to Poser unimesh and then add subdivision, if you want a higher resolution figure. I didn't do that, and it still looks fine to me. But you might get more detail if you do do it.

AFAIK, this method works for any Genesis or Genesis 2 figure or item of clothing. For clothing, you will probably want to dial in the morphs you want before you export the CR2. For characters, you are stuck with whichever UV you choose (you can only choose 1). I don't find this to be a shockingly terrible burden however. V4 only has one UV, after all.

I do know that when you convert Genesis 2 and use the V4 UV (you must own the V4 for Genesis 2 Females to get this), MC5s and mat pose files won't work because, while the figure is mapped to take the textures, the names seem to be different. I did have to apply the textures by hand for Genesis 2 figures using V4 or M4 UVs. But I may have done something wrong. Not sure.

If you don't want your characters to have every addon morph you own, you just have to remove the ones you don't want in any given figure from the Daz Studio runtime before you export.

For clothing, you probably don't want Poser's subdivision. It probably won't work (there may be errors), and clothes are usually pretty high resolution anyway.

In the guide for Creator's Toybox, Netherworks suggests not exporting clothing from Daz Studio, but simply converting from a DSON save. I found that this resulted in clothes that still had remnants of calls to the DSON script in them, so I choose to export them the way I do character figures. Again, I may well have done something wrong with CT script. But my method still works.

Finally, you may be able to do this without Netherwork's Script. But I believe that it does some nice things that make the figures work better, and may be necessary. I could be wrong about that too. You're free to experiment by exporting figs without it, of course. :)

One more thing.

Above, where I suggested that you could just copy the poses and MC6's from the Poser Companion files... I don't believe that will work. Looking at the files, they use python to activate the DSON importer. The poser files are all 1kb. Too bad. However, using the DSON importer just for poses and materials doesn't affect your UI as long as you're using a figure that's converted to a native Poser figure -- because the DSON importer is only activated to apply the pose or materials.

On the other hand, I haven't tried using CT to clean MC6s. Not sure if it would work or not. :)

No UI slowdown with multiple figures. I got bored with hitting edit>duplicate and applying poses, so I stopped at 12. But I could certainly have kept going.

This is the Genesis gorilla, btw. I didn't even know there was one for Genesis 2 with HD morphs. (HD morphs work on a converted figure, but require subdivision 3 (apply right before render -- and you may not/probably won't get 12 of them to render), and while the HD morphs look good, they do NOT look as good as they do when you use a DSON importer figure.
