Back up often, and keep multiple backups; I have 2 external drives I alternate using.

I use Karen's Replicator to do my backups; it's a free incremental copy utility. It's by Karen Kenworthy, a computer columnist who sadly passed away several years back, but it still works well under Windows 7...
