OK!  that was quick... this is obviously a bug, but instead of deleting my thread i'll note the fix in case anyone else has had this.  All i did was click the little "Frame Selected Object" button on the lower left.  That zoomed me in sharply to the bodypart i had selected.  I then just zoomed back out and POOF!  Camera flipped itself rightside up again.
