It really depends on the style you're going for. You can go ultra simple or really detailed. I would suggest having a look at some of your favorite animated films or shows and thinking about which style you like the most and then try achieving something similar. For a character like Star, who is heavily anime influenced, this is particularly important, as there are hyper detailed anime figures and super simplistic anime figures - both valid design choices.
