Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 29 7:57 am)
Hi Paul
Thanks .I had since long in mind to test Octane for Poser and may buy a licence.
Now I take your offer, Install it but I can not activate the Poser trial licence . Any suggestions.
La vie est éternelle. L'amour est immortel.
“Dwell on the beauty of life. Watch the stars, and see yourself running with them.”
― Marcus Aurelius,
Glitterati, I got it, but when I use the ID and password it tells me wrong ID or Password.
Ladonna, I got 2 of them and it was the 2nd one which worked. The first one gave me the same. Also, be careful if you are doing a copy and paste - there are lots of spaces the copy command will pick up on the web page. I copied the user/pw combo into a text editor and made sure all the spaces were removed.
Twice I attempted simple renders, Octane rendered for just shy of 2 minutes and crashed the computer both times.
This is generally happening due to hardware issue - 99% of cases due to the PC power supply being insufficient to adequately power your card(s). What video card(s) are you running? Which NVidia driver version do you have installed? Have you overclocked your card(s)?

Sorry, Paul. Whatever it is, I'm not willing to risk my computer for a render engine I can't afford in the long term anyway. I have the GT650 with 2Mb RAM on the card, 8Gb RAM in the machine and I overclock nothing. But, the bottom line is simple. I won't re-install (yes, I've already removed it) because I won't risk the health of my computer with continued crashes.

I have never heard of anyone damagng their equipment using Octane. Cuda is even nice enough to throw an error when your graphics card gets too hot. Seeing your equipment very low spec - I think the issue is actually the NVidia drivers timing out. The resolution for this is to set your Render Prior to Low - http://render.otoy.com/manuals/Poser/?page_id=29. You can also run the OctaneVR Standalone installer, which will increase the NVidia card timeout.
(Whilst I realise your will not re-install, others might have this same issue - so providing the answer above for their reference).

EDIT to the top post - the plugin works on Poser 9/Pro 2012 too.

To clarify the authentication process, I have added a page to the manual - http://render.otoy.com/manuals/Poser/?page_id=401.
Any news on the Octane 3 OpenCL when should be available(demo)?
The demo version of the Octane plugins usually come out quite some time after the initial test versions, so I think it will be a while (6-9 months from now at a wild guess). The test version, which will be available to full license holders will be available well before the demo version.
I've bought R9 290 just due the I mostly using OpenCL apps and I've got previously GTX560Ti which has been pain in arse
You can put both cards in your PC. Run the R9 290 as your display adapter, and have the GTX560Ti as a second card, which Octane will detect and use. Paul

Hi Paul
Thanks for reply
If test version is or will be available I would like to know results at least, not sure what is best way, wait on Octane or go with Octane 2 and then upgrade to Octane 3 and test this Octane 3 when will be available or wait on official demo, decisions, how I hate this
Yes I can use both cards, but I've sold the card as this card has been for no use, wish I knew something coming out and buying again new Nvidia card for me doesn't make sense, rather I would buy extra R9 290
Thanks again for yours reply,Jura
Jura - I cannot provide a definitive answer right now. However a quote from the Otoy CEO today....
Re: Octane Subscription Based App????
This is being experimented with today through OctaneVR, and the OVR Blender and Poser plug-ins. Currently the monthly price is free throughout the duration of the Metaverse contest. We may keep it free, migrate users to OR or charge a monthly subscription after it ends. We are waiting to see how the next 90 days turn out before making a decision. A free or low monthly price is meant to help users on any budget to get started with Octane, and also leverage orc.otoy.com for big renders, rather than investing in local GPUs up front. Also, we are exploring options where we offer Octane (and supported 3rd party apps) entirely from the cloud (e.g. the OctaneVR demo above) for those interested in such an option.
My interpretation of the above is that the Poser plugin may be available be subscription, so you could sign up for a month, try it, and cancel if you don't like it.

Thanks Paul for this If Octane will be subscription based, then please count me in,as most of us we are hobbyist and really spending such amount in one go is not for me,this equating for me
Thanks again Paul for reply
Thanks,Jura
Just a reminder - the 3 month free Octane trial has come about due to the Render the Metaverse contest. This contest has $35,000 in prizes! So use free software to submit an entry for a competition with some serious prizemoney! It would be great to see as many OctaneRender for Poser entries as possible.

I just installed both the stand alone and the poser plugin but when I try to run the octane.exe I get this message: The procedure entry point cuMemHostRegister_v2 could not be located in the dynamic link library nvcuda.dll.
I checked the otoy forums and there were others with a similar problem but no official response, just other users talking about updating NVidia drivers. Is that the only reason I'm getting this message or could it be something else too?
Hi Everyone - you can see the competition entries submitted so far at http://render.otoy.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=97.

hiz! i'm a little confuzed do i install just the poser plugin or do i install both plugin and octane vr??
It is recommended to install Octane Standalone, if only to setup some Nvidia driver defaults in your registry. No need to run it - and you can uninstall it later if you have no need for it.

You have two accounts - one for Octane stand alone and one for the Poser plugin
The poser plugin account is the one you should use. It may be however that you may need to activate the standalone first if it never has been activated. If so, use the stand alone account first and then the poser plugin account
Sorry you are having trouble activating the plugin. Can you pls try the process described in the manual at http://render.otoy.com/manuals/Poser/?page_id=401.

You need to exactly follow the instructions in the manual - so that means applying for both an OctaneStandalone VR license and an OctaneRender for Poser VR license.

Quote: Is it possible to render two V4 and two M4 characters in octane render with a basic scene in the background in 15 minutes and under and have it look decent?
Generally,Yes (depending on your lighting) - set Kernel->GI Clamp to 5, Imager->Hotpixel to 0, and Kernel->Path Termination Power to 0.1.

The Metaverse competitor is now over - and the overall winners can be viewed at https://home.otoy.com/render-the-metaverse-month-3-grand-prize/ - they look stunning!
This mean the 3 month free trial of OctaneRender for Poser is now also over, so your OctaneVR versions will stop working shortly (if they haven't already).
Thanks everyone who participated.

Will there be an option to monthly rent Octane Render + Poser plugin in the future?
I hope so. When I hear more on this I will report back here...

Here's a snipped directly from from the Octane Render FAQ:
https://home.otoy.com/render/octane-render/faqs/
...
"What are the hardware requirements for OctaneRender?
OctaneRender requires a CUDA enabled NVIDIA video card. An up to date list can be found here.
OctaneRender can run on most CUDA enabled consumer video cards, instead of only on high-end Quadro cards that most other solutions and middleware require, but it is specifically optimized to run on Kepler (GTX 6xx, GTX 7xx, GTX Titan), Fermi (GTX 4xx, GTX 5xx) and Maxwell GPUs. Kepler GPUs allow a higher texture limit (256 compared to 128 on Fermi) and are more power efficient and silent than Fermi cards. GPUs from the GeForce line are usually higher clocked and render faster than the more expensive Quadro and Tesla GPUs...."
Noting, that this was put up quite a while ago already. GTX9xx (and other) cards are working well, too. Currently they're working on full support of the new Maxwell technologie (Titan X, GTX 1080 ...). These crades are already working, and that really well, but they're still not optimized yet. Once they're fully supported, the benefit will be even greater.

Hi. The OctaneRender for Poser plugin has been made available as a 3 month free trial (ie. nothing to pay for Octane or the Poser plugin for 3 months) as part of the OctaneVR competition. See http://home.otoy.com/vr-competition/ for details. Also make sure you try the Try Octane In Your Browser option - it is very cool.
As a reminder, you will need Windows 32 or 64 bit, or OSX 64 bit, Poser 10 or Poser Pro 2014, and an NVidia card (GTX 500 series or later). OpenCL support is scheduled to be added with Octane 3.
Thanks
