You can carefully craft a perfect vertex normal map for your 3D object with perfect smoothing and hard edges where it is needed in a modeling program. Poser will just rip it off and add it's own terrible normal map and destroy your model. That's just how Poser works - or so I'm told by Smith Micro support.
